A couple of awesome Christmas Gifts!

Got a couple of terrific gifts from Car this Christmas, both books and both Japanese, to boot! Now, I'm the kind of guy that, when I like something, I'm manic about collecting everything about it the moment it becomes available, so it's always a happy surprise when she picks up stuff I didn't even know existed!

Knowing of my love for that Aoi Miyazaki show, she got me the third and final of the Companion books from NHK’s Taiga Drama ATSUHIME! I hadn't even realized they MADE a third book! Although I haven’t really been all that excited about Atsuhime ever since the Shogun died, It's still the only japanese drama I'm watching right now, so it was pretty cool to get this book- look at that beautiful cover! Lots of great shots of the latter cast and crew, plus the obligatory “out of costume” shots of Miyazaki Aoi, always a draw for me in ANY photo shoot!

Kind of interesting to note that in Atsuhime, there’s a geisha played by actress Natsuki Harada named Okoto who has a fling with Eita’s character Tatewaki (and gives bitrth to his child...yikes!), but she wasn’t featured in either of the first two books. I thought, "Gee, maybe if they made a THIRD book, she’d be in it”. Then when I saw that there WAS a third book, I figured, finally! She MUST be in this one, RIGHT?!…but I was wrong!!!

EDIT: As Vincent-Sama and others have pointed out to me, Natsuki Harada WAS featured in the second book, as well as the character index in the third book! I've GOT to read these books a bit SLOWERRRRRR...I'm missing too much!

Car ALSO got me the latest picture book from my favorite japanese illustrator, SHUNYA YAMASHITA! I’ve long been a fan of Yamashita’s[山下しゅんや], whose art style seems to be a meld of 1950’s Good Girl art and 1970’s Japanese Anime (a unique formula that yields the sexiest, cutest gals you ever laid eyes upon) and the pin-ups featured in this book do NOT disappoint!

Called WILDFLOWER, the book is broken up into chapter sections featuring his all-encompassing work on figures, character design, video, card games, and more, but for me, the highlight was the "unpublished" section of the book, featuring all the sketches of his sexy GIRLS! Man, the artwork here is just unbelievable- I swear there isn’t ANYONE out there who has a style quite like Yamashita’s!

Sorede, I’ve scanned a couple of my favorite pin-ups here for you all to check out! Enjoy~

Favorite J-Pop Singles: IZAM with Astral Love / Sunaona Mamade

I’ve mentioned quite a few times on this blog about how certain j-doramas (YES, I’m calling them j-Doramas, what’s it to you, bub) become even better by having a kick-ass ending song, and  The Esumi Makiko comedy SHOMUNI hits that one the head TWICE, having both a killer Ending song AND an awesome OPENING song, as well!

The opening song is a rocking little number  called “SORE JYA BYE-BYE”, a slightly gangster-ish sounding tune performed by group SURFACE. In this opening, we see the cameras speeding in to the Business Building and zooming up to the various “members” of Shomuni, From Esumi Makiko through to Kyono Kotomi and Atsuko Sakurai(!), leading up to doddering old Leo Morimoto as he closes the ratty Shomuni basement door.

The ENDING song to SHOMUNI started off with a close-up of Esumi Makiko’s feet, and as the credits start rolling, the camera starts slowly pulling back until you eventually see all six of the SHOMUNI members in their “Kakkoi” stance”, and they looked VERY cool indeed!

The  pullaway shot of the Shomuni Girls was intercut with various “stills” from the week’s episode, as the eighties flavored (Think “Be Near Me” by ABC and “Red Red Wine” by UB40) song drawled over the visuals…such a perfect mix! This song ALWAYS made the endings even better!

My earliest memory of seeing IZAM was back when Tower Records was selling J-pop Calendars, and this one girl went up to one of our managers, and showing him the calendar of SHAZNA, asked him which girl he thought was the prettiest. After  perusing the calendar for a minute or so, decided on the lead singer. “Her, I Guess”, he offered, handing back the calendar to the girl...She sweetly took it back and  said, “Oh, you think that one? Cool.” She was about to walk away when she turned and added, “Oh, By The way…these are guys.” My Supervisor made a stern face and then levelly but irritatingly said, “Don’t Do That.”. Ahahahaha! The “girl” he had picked was none other than IZAM!

Years later, when  Me and Car dug out those old VHS tapes of SHOMUNI out to watch, she liked the songs so much I went to go look for live performances I had of both “Sore Jya Bye Bye” by Surface, and “Sunao o Mama De” on MUSIC STATION.

Car's been a BIG Culture Club fan from way back, she just LOVED Izam's flamboyant ways, but our 6 year old kid summed up the IZAM experience succinctly and dismissively by flatly stating out loud to us, “That singer looks like a girl!” Ahahahahahaa!

SHOMUNI itself would go onto spawning a couple of sequels and even a SPECIAL! The legend of those crazy Shomuni girls lives on!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: L⇔R / Day By Day

Way back in 1995 or 1996 one night Dayone was watching a weekly “spooky stories” show  on Fuji Television called “Mokuyo No Kaidan”, literally, “Ghost Stories on Thursdays”, and when they aired the previews for the upcoming episode, he was surprised to see that the episode was going to feature none other than Miura Rieko!

Being Huge fans of Pony Canyon j-pop idol group CoCo, we were thrilled whenever we found them in anything, whether it be MORI MORI DREAMS or those wacky WIDE SPECIALS, but this was something else! Plus, It occurred to me that this would be the first time I would be watching lovely Rieko speak and have subtitles so I could understand everything she said!

All week we were on pins and needles waiting for the episode to air, and when the night finally came around, we picked up dinner and drinks , planning to make an event of the airing! So we sat back, and  the show’s familiar opening began: a solemn young girl beckoned you to come closer, then her face (with the help of CGI) melted away to reveal skeletal zombie-like visage as the title MOKUYO NO KAIDAN appeared…

And THEN…...Some OTHER episode started!

WHAA! What happened? How come they didn’t show the Rieko episode? Well, we just didn’t know. In fact, it’s still a big mystery though I would later learn (when I became a subscriber) that NGN sometimes got hella wonky with their programming, and should expect problems like this. But at the time… MAN, we were MAD! All week waiting for NOTHING! We could only hope they would correct the oversight and air the CORRECT episode next week!

Argh, so back to waiting…Another whole week til Thursday came up again…

Fortunately, when Mokuyo No Kaidan  came on that Thursday night, as soon as it began, we relaxed immediately, for it was INDEED the Rieko episode! YATTA! At Last! With an interesting soundtrack of Pink Floyd’s “Money” as the backdrop, our story "SECRET CIRCLE" began…

The episode’s main character was played by Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of SMAP as Shinichi, (but we didn’t know him at the time). Back then, he was simply “The Dude in the episode with Rieko”! Anyway, Shinichi’s the kind of guy who yearns to be what he isn’t. He wants to be popular and rich, and when we first meet up with him, he’s cruising around in a rented sports car, trying to look like one of the upper crust. It’s while waiting on a light that he meets Rieko’s character, the mysterious Maria.

Maria introduces Shinichi to her “exclusive” club, a morose group of members who are obsessed with things of a  distinctly macabre nature… When  they first arrive at the club, the group is huddled around a TV set watching coverage of a terrible train wreck, and Shinichi is horrified to find that they are betting on how many people have died in the accident. He knows this is strange to say the least, but wanting to be a part of their exclusive club, decides not to say anything, and offers his guess of 10 casualties.  The others are surprised at his low guess. “They said it was OVER ten people dead,” they point out. “I WANT it to be ONLY ten", he mumbles.

Well, Tsuyo’s guess is announced as the correct amount, and he is rewarded with a HUGE sum of money. Maria congratulates him and says he’s officially one of the exclusive members, and he should be happy. Shinichi accepts this at first, and uses he money to buy his sister gifts and expensive clothes for himself. But as the days go by and the members bets turn more and more sinister, Tsuyo has to look into himself and decide how much popularity and money is worth in the long run.

As the show ended, the “Crypt Keeper” zombie bid you farewell with echoing laughter and then it went to ending credits… and L <-> R’s jangly, cheerful and sunny song “Day By Day” began, in jarring juxtaposition to the rest of the show! We were like ‘Ehhh? This song doesn’t match the show AT ALL!”

But you know, we watched that episode so much that it started to grow on me, and  eventually became “perfect” as the ending song! Such a strange ending- The credits scroll while specters of the morose girl from the beginning of the show (the one that turns into the monster) stand around sullenly in a dimly lit furnished room while this happy music plays on!

P.S: Yes, this is the same Mokuyo No Kaidan that fetured the show "Adventures of the Kaiki Club", that Scooby-Doo-esque kid detective show that starred (among others)  a young Takizawa Hideaki!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Hirose Kohmi / Romance No Kamisama

As readers of this blog know very well, I am a HUGE fan of artist Hirose Kohmi, and I got an early Christmas present in the form of the 2008 FNS Kayousai Telecast, where Kohmi Hirose was featured singing one of my very favorite songs from her, ROMANCE NO KAMISAMA!

Not only has it been YEARS since I saw my beloved Kohmi Hirose performing anything, but to see her do two classic singles of hers, both Romance no Kamisama AND Dear…Again just made it all the more special! There she was onstage, looking fine, but she wasn't alone!

The song began with Kohmi  singing the powerful ballad Dear Again along with newcomer R&B style vocallist Thelma Aoyama, and then, suddenly, the music picked up, and  a VERY familiar tune started..."OH MY GOSH! It's Romance No Kamisama!!", I yelled out loud!

Just when it couldn’t get better, they introduced the two cutie trios PERFUME and PABO onstage!

It was so cute watching the girls struggle to sing along with Kohmi’s music, and I even think at one point Perfume's mikes were off! (But, aw, they were havin' FUN-look at those broad smiles on their faces)

THEN, they brought out AYAKA, and she just sealed the performance, laying in with that incredible voice of hers!

Then all of them, Pabo, Perfume, Thelma Aoyama, Ayaka and of course Kohmi herself wrapped up the song with a terrific finish! Ah...A cool and totally unexpected treat for me!

Romance No Kamisama (The Cupid of Romance) was one of the very first songs I ever knew from Ms. Hirose, and for the longest time, I just couldn’t get a copy of the single for myself! I am happy to say now that this was one of the MANY singles I was able to acquire through the mighty OTOKICHI PREMIUM site!!

Tanoshii! Suzanne on Arashi No Shukudaikun

It’s definitely a great time to have PABO on the brain, with lovely ladies Mai Sadota, Suzanne and Yukina Kinoshita appearing all over the place! The gals have even been guesting on several Johnny’s shows- Yukina appeared just the other week on Shin Domoto Kyoudai and  Mai Sadota’s been on both VS Arashi AND Domoto Tsuyoshi no Shojiki Shindoi (at least twice!), but my favorite guest spot has to be last week’s ARASHI NO SHUKUDAIKUN when super cutie Suzanne stopped by! So genki and lovable, she just made the episode!

First thing they discuss is how she created her nickname, Suzanne (her real name’s Sae Yamamoto), and before you know it, she’s come up with nicknames for all of them, made up right on the spot! She’s quite good at coming up with those vaguely abstract contracted nicknames, and ther reactions of the boys when they’ve heard their new nicknames is PRICELESS!

Kazunari Ninomiya:
Noniramen

Ohno Satoshi(Riida):
Otton

Sakurai Sho:
Sasshon

My personal favorite:
Aiba Masaki:
Banjii

And the nickname that cracked everybody Up:
Matsumoto Jun:
J

Then they get down to the interview about her  real life and how she's percieved by the public. During the interview, Suzanne makes sure she gives props out to her BFF's, the other two girls in Pabo, Mai and Yukina,

Then they decide to perform a Mock Date with her, and it was fun watching the boys jan-ken-po to see who the lucky boyfriend would be, much to the delight of Suzanne!
The lucky winner  ends up being “J”, rather, Matsujun. They perform the skit, but it’s so chattery and wordy,
Nino can’t keep a straight face through it…which ultimately ends the play!

During the food segment, Suzanne got treated to different variations of her beloved sweet potato, and cracked everybody up when she said “Mmmmmmmmm…Mai!” (Umai, delicious)

And speaking of delicious, after this episode, I had to go online and look for pics of her! Umai indeed! (see below)

Ahhhh...Did I Mention how much I was looking forward to Aladdin's performance on the Kouhaku this year? Yes, I Did!

My Vote for Kouhaku Opening Act: Aladdin!

There has been quite a bit of speculation about which artist is going to be chosen to open this year’s Kouhaku~Red and White Song Fest, but If I had it MY way, I would have the show open with the cute, happy and jangly pop song “Hi wa, Mata Noboru” by six member band ALADDIN!
The Kouhaku tends to open with a bright low impact pop tune to start the show fresh (witness MIHIMARU GT’s appearance last year), and this song’s got everything the show could want: a happy tune with genki dance moves, and lyrics shouting “GANBARE NIPPON!” as they sing about the virtues of Instant Ramen, Canned Coffee, Mechanical Pencils and Karaoke: This country invented these!!

Off their album ALADDIN THE SECOND, this single was in the Oricon charts for a while earlier this July, and their resemblance (to me) of AAA struck a chord and made me sit up and take notice of them!

Made up of two groups off the HEXAGON II Quiz show: Shuchishin (Tsuruno Takeshi, Kamiji Yuusuke, and Nokubo Naoki), and Pabo ( Satoda Mai, Suzanne, Kinoshita Yukina), ALADDIN’s got those AAA “Disney High School Musical” vibes down pat!

MY first thoughts upon hearing Hi wa Mata Noboru (The Sun Will Rise Again!) was “Wow, this song sounds like the theme for a Sentai show!”. Then I had a chance to check out the video and WOW again when I saw those girls, Ahahaha!  I’m not saying that I KNOW that this song will be the Kouhaku opener…who knows WHAT song they’ll sing at this point. But It’s the song I WANT them to sing! And I think an opener like this one will TOTALLY set the mood for the whole show! (crosses fingers)

Car, who's not a fan at ALL of Aladdin, said, "This song is TERRIBLE!  If anything, it'll be that mid-show act where all the guests come out and sing, NOT the opening song!" Well, it might be a zany song, but I wouldn't call it TERRIBLE! At best it's a silly little song, and if you can't get silly during a New Year's Celebration, when can you?!

Crush of the Day: Sawajiri Erika

Like a lot of people, I fell in love with Erika Sawajiri through that awesome j-drama 1 Litre of Tears.
She was just so pretty in this one. Above is a capture of my very favorite outfit of hers, this summer dress, she looked so cute in it! Unfortunately, most of the full-body shots of her in this outfit, she's either in the hospital or standing in the rain, all wet! :(
I didn't watch 1 Litre of Tears til years after it aired. When i finally got around to watching it, I loved the show so much, and fell in love with Erika Sawajiri.
Then my friend Car said 'Hey, wasn't that the girl who had that scandal where she was being interviewed and she was giving all that attitude to the press?"
My mouth dropped open, and I yelled "What! That was HER?" For I totally remembered that fiasco.
This bummed me out, because one likes to believe that the actors (and actresses)in dramas are just like the characters they play in their dramas, and I didn't like this memory of the "real" Erika Sawajiri intruding!

Fortunately, I still had over half the drama to watch, and by the 7th episode, I regained my image of Erika as the sweet little girl, and I'm gonna retain that image in my head as long as possible! Erika Daisuki! Ahahahahaha!

Addendum:
Say what you will about Erika good or bad, but when it gets right down to it, she’s simply a beautiful girl and as these pics from the 2010 GLAMOUR Photoshoot will attest, she’s absolutely captivating in front of a camera! Oooh, and those last few shots of her sprawled out over those books can KILL!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Kondo Masahiko / Ai wa Hitotsu

Since we were talking about curvaceous model Akiko Hinagata the other week, I thought it was time to  come clean about a guilty pleasure of mine.

Remember that Japanese drama that came out around 1997 starring Akiko Hinagata and Jinnai Takanori called STALKER~SASOU-ONNA? The one where Akiko plays the psychotic Glenn Close to Jinnai Takanori’s Michael Douglas a la FATAL ATTRACTION? And was universally panned for being outrageous and silly? That One?

I fricking LOVED IT!

That is to say, all the way up until the last episode, I thought that show was right up there with shows like LONG VACATION, SAY YOU LOVE ME and HITOTSU YANE NO SHITA! Gasp!

But then, the LAST episode aired, and they concluded the show with a very fake stuffed Akiko Hinagata falling down a flight of stairs… and I had my moment of clarity: “Say…maybe this drama AIN’T all that, after all!” Then I thought about the past 10 weeks when I was raving to anyone who would listen about this fantastic, gripping show, and how I would have to face them afterwards! Ahahahaha!

But…Why did I love it so much?

Well, like I mentioned before, the drama WAS a more or lessj-dorama rip-off of Fatal Attraction, with Akiko as the nut case girlfriend, Jinnai Takanori as the befuddled cheatin’ husband, and forever slighted Yumi Aso as the heartbroken wife, and HEY at least it was ENTERTAINING, right? And of course, Akiko was lovely to look at either way,(except for when she had a knife in her hand, of course) so think I would have rated this an OK drama anyway, but the fact of the matter is, the thing that I absolutely LOVED THE MOST about the drama was THE THEME SONG.

It’s true, and I think if you ask any of my friends who I’d preached to about the show’s greatness, they’d agree that the thing I always raved about was the way the drama would have this chilling cliffhanger, then the show would fade to black, and the incredible song “Ai Wa Hitotsu” would start and the credits would start scrolling. A perfect song to match the show, rocking and melodramatic at the same time, It was one of those ending credits that had the same collage of clips set to the music, so that after about three episodes, you got used to seeing specific images with specific lines in the song- THAT SHOW WAS LIKE THAT!

Well, for 10 episodes that show thrilled me, but unfortunately, as I’ve already mentioned, that last episode was so dreadfully silly and zany that it made the other episodes seem silly as well, and one blogger somewhere (I forget where) sums up the entire series in the most accurate and succinct way: “Akiko Hinagata threatens Jinnai Takanori each week, and he makes his “Oh No Mr. Bill face!” Ahahaha, Oh My Gosh that was it exactly!

I remember later I saw Akiko on some show (I think it was MECHA MECHA IKETERU) and she was happily involved in a hilarious spoof of Stalker Sasao-Onna, where instead of demanding Jinnai Takanori to make love to her, she’s demanding the guy (I think Okamura dressed as Jinnai Takanori) to let her put mayonnaise on his head!

Instead of breathing “Shuji-san, make love to me”, she’s going “Shuji, Shuji…Mayonnaise! Mayonnaise!” And of course the spoof ends with Okamura sitting there while Akiko happily squirts some mayo out of a tube onto his face! AHAHAHAHAHAA!!

Whew! That was too much! Okay, Here’s Ai Wa Hitotsu” by the big old Johnny’s Dai-Sempai himself, Masahiko Kondo!

Ah did you manage to transfer the drama to DVD? I purchased the recorder but have yet to attempt a VHS to DVD transfer. You know I never knew that this theme song was done by a Johnny's member but then again all I really knew back then was Smap! :P This song's really catchy and you can really picture the credit footage. LOL OMG the 'dummy'??!! It was like they suddenly ran out of budget to make it look a bit more um real. :/ Still I remember you ♥ing this drama so much! ^ ^

LOL I wish I could've watched that spoof too~! Sounds so funny and..eh?...'mayonnaise?!' :O Birdman was really bothersome for me though...just kept thinking...why aren't you doing something?!! >_< But then years later Kato Noriko would do much the same in a sense and I remember M saying that...and I quote: "she just stands there looking pretty." LOL :O I think the drama had Asuka singing the theme song..was in "One?"..I can't remember at the moment.

Really nostalgic! Thanks for sharing the single and memories! ^ ^

Did you manage to transfer the drama to DVD?

Naw, for this entry I only copied a snippet of it on DVD so I could capture the elevator scene with Akiko checking out Jinnai.

Oh, and I found that j-dorama page that made the “Mr. Bill” quip, it was on micahworld http://www.micahworld.com, where they had this to say about Stalker Sasao Onna:

Best "So Bad It's Good" Dorama: Sutouka Sasou Onna (The Stalker). Unintentionally hilarious show about a woman who goes off the deep end. It's worth watching just for Jinnai Takanori's constant "Oh No!" Mr.-Bill expressions, but there's a lot more! By the time you reach the final episode and the ending, you'll be rolling on the floor.

I don't think I really knew Matchy (as they call him) was Johnnys at the time either, but remember on the 1995 Kohaku, when he did "Midnight Shuffle", KinKi Kids danced the intro and sang the first verse with him onstage, so I should have had an idea, I guess!

Kondo and Nakamori Akina kinda lived this drama, no?

'Best so bad it's good' drama! lol! Ah that's so true though....Birdman was definitely channeling Mr. Bill throughout~! O__o By the 'ending' like you mentioned they must be referring to the "dummy" incident. :O It's like the whole production team lost the will to even try realism and it really does make you go Eh?! O__o

Wow you're right they do have similar tastes! I haven't heard of that drama either though....was it on NGN? This person's pretty old school though...thank you for sharing the link! ^ ^ LOL! EH?~! '55?'....... O__o Saburo may be right! ^o^

Kinki Kids....Kinki Kids.....when did I know of them?...hmmm.....(goes to check...) not until the Summer of '98 when I first purchase a single and their first album. Are they still using alphabets to name them? A friend once joked that after they reach "Z" they'll have to start calling their albums "AA....BB....until one day it's "AAA" for car assistance! :P And I remember having trouble back then convincing a few people that "Kinki" is a prefecture if you know what I mean!......the jokes never ended back then so I eventually gave up and joined them! :P If you ever bump into Jim W. mention Kinki Kids to him if you dare! :) Wow you knew of them from way back and I didn't even know that they existed back then....must say your memory is amazing!!

And speaking of the Kinki Kids I forgot to mention....what in the world is going on with Domoto Tsuyoshi?! O_o I didn't know what was going on with his hair at first but then it's like he became an old man inside. O_o ?!! This is not the same person that I enjoyed watching in "To Heart" and "Summer Snow!" :O It's like he's trying to be someone else....I just haven't figured out who that is yet. Granted I haven't watched Domoto Kyoudai in ages and thank you for those! ^ ^

    * zdorama replied to MorningBerryz’s comment:

It's funny because his all around image has gotten even stranger since!
At first it seemed like he was doing his Johnny Depp, but in the latest Shojiki Shindois, he's wearing these glasses that make him look like a 50 year old driving instructor!

    * MorningBerryz replied to zdorama’s comment:

Ah Johnny Depp! I think he was best in "Sleepy Hollow"..so funny and cool at the same time! ^ ^ But Domoto Tsuyoshi is beginning to weird me out a little or maybe that's too strong. Okay, puzzle me. O_o Hmmm...if he's going for a '50' year old look now I shudder to think of what image he'll portray when he's actually 50 years old. :O ....."OMG! Tsuyoshisan is bringing his walker onto the set again!" :o
