Notes On "Loss Time Life"

I've been watching LOSS TIME LIFE recently, that suspense drama where heavenly referees appear at the end of someone's life and gives them additional time to make any last chance actions or decisions before they go on to meet their maker. Each episode is self-contained and stars a different actor or actress as the lead.
The first episode featured actor Eita as a roving photojournalist who gets shot down by the mob as he's investigating a case. He's given an additional 3+ hours to wrap up his life the way he'd like. When the time runs out, he's placed back in front of the bullets, and the show fades to black.
The second episode featured Koyama Keiichiro (at the time, it DID occur to me that this dude looked like a Johnny's guy, then Car verified that he was in fact a member of NEWS) as a green police inspector of the first day of work. He gets shot on the trail of a murder case that his senior has been trying to solve for years. With the extra time given him, he has a chance to make the arrest.

Now, up until this point, the drama series has been only so-so with me, though both episodes held my interest long enough, it just didn't have enough impact squeezed into one episode, and certainly not enough time to make me really "care" about the characters.

Then I saw episode three, "Sukiyaki" which dealt with a family mother (played by the wonderful TomoChika) whose sole purpose is to take care of her family, and on the day she's killed in a bicycle accident, has her mind set on getting some rare beef for the night's sukiyaki dinner.  Now, I have to say that for the most part, this was a mostly comedic epsiode, as most shows that feature those "ladies that charge the supermarkets on sale days to battle other housewives like madmen" tend to be, but I have to say that somehow, this episode really GOT to me!
After the accident and she's realized that she has only a few hours left with her family, she tries to make their sukiyaki dinner a memorable one. While prepping for the meal, she realizes how "dependent" on her her two children and Husband are, so gently and thoughtfully, she tries to get them to be stronger for the inevitable time she won't be there to take care of them.
Scenes like tenderly teaching her daughter how to prepare the sukiyaki, reminiscing with her husband, or chit-chatting with her son, "You'll be in High School next Year, right? You can play soccer, ne?" just broke my heart. In the end after saying goodbye to her unknowing family, she is brought back to the site of her death, she walks towards the bicycle, and slowly steps into the shadows. SO SAD!
I should also mention that the ending song "Kimi Station" by Orange Range is a very fitting song for this drama. After watching the first two episodes, the song had already taken on a kind of melancholy feel to it, and when it went to credits in "Sukiyaki", MAN, I just. could. not. stop. crying!

Ahh, maybe I'm just getting old, but after this episode, I was, like, destroyed! Man, I haven't been that sad since I saw the opening scenes in Pixar's UP...and that's saying something!

(Wipes away tears) Now off to watch Episode 4 featuring none other than sweetie Ueno Juri!

Quotable J-Drama Quotes

One of the most fantastically awesome quotes ever uttered by cutie actress Aya Ueto in any drama, movie or CM she’s ever been in, anyplace or anywhere:
We'd like to state for the record: "They are, Aya...They ARE!"

It's Marukajiri Yuko

Okay, I found out the cute girl in the video clip scarfing down that watermelon is none other than Yuko Marukajiri of GGWnot only does she already have quite a following online, she’s made tons of these videos of her eating a variety of different fruits, all dressed in cutesy dresses or bikinis. Heck, she’s even got her own twitter! http://twitter.com/#!/marukajiriyuko

A Passing Fukuda Saki Thought...

Adorable Saki Fukuda in MAID DEKA
News of Saki Fukuda's new CD single SNOW RAIN reminds me that I've STILL got her "Maid Deka" series on my HD, hoping one day for subs. After a drama’s been over and done with  for such a long time, is it just wishful thinking to dream that someone will sub it this late in the game? Sigh.

Zany Is as Zany Does: More Asami

Unbelievably, it looks like YUME WO KANAERU ZO, that wacky Mizukawa Asami hijinks drama that gave me such a headache early on, is shaping up into my FAVORITE DRAMA RIGHT NOW!! Soo, soo good, Asami sooo CUTE and the stories so omoshiroii! In fact,  I just HAD to share this one particularly funny passage that just cracked me up!

Asami’s character Asuka has been having problems with a conceited ad exec named Amita (played by the ever-stoic Maruyama Tomomi) who has been making a play for her, and when she refuses his advances, manages to get her fired.

Asuka has sadly cleared out her things and is leaving the building, frowning upon a can of wrinkle powder given to her as a parting gift, when she bangs into Amita and her section chief along with an important client. The powder goes everywhere, and Amita angrily accuses her of banging into them “on purpose”, and that’s when Asuka’s had enough!

AHAHAHAHA!! You Go, GIRL!!! Taking Shaking and Baking to a whole new level! HAHA, calling him "Colonel Sanders" after he's been properly floured like a chicken!
Aw, man, my crush on Asami is multiplying every day with this drama- just GREAT to see her going all out on all cylinders! Cute, Fun, Pretty and Sassy!
(Subs by the awesome QUERBEET team)

AAA finally makes it to the Kohaku!

Well, it only took like 5 years, but finally I'm gonna get to see AAA appearing on the Kohaku!
That's a pretty long time to wait for a group that won the Record Taisho  at the time of their debut (For What the Taisho is worth, anyway)... funny, I JUST downloaded a live performance of Nissy and the gang singing their new song PARADISE a few nights ago, hopefully this is the song they'll be performing!

Also appearing (among others) will be the lovely Nishino Kana, who I'm hoping will sing her sweet song "Best Friend", a big fave of ours!

スイカ娘 食べる!!

Saw this fun clip that's going around of this extremely cute and genki japanese idol girl happily eating a slice of watermelon. Parts of the clip look edited because the pieces of Watermelon seem to simply disappear, but it's so cute the way she cheers and gestures as she's trying to polish the thing off!
I have NO IDEA who this girl is, or where she came from, but I thought it was funny as heck and it put a smile on my face! This may be some gravure video from some up and coming idol, or, for all I know, this could be the opening to some spectacular JAV! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Oiiiisshhhiiiiiiiiiii!!!!

Edit: She is Yuko Marukajiri !

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Koizumi Kyoko / For My Life

One thing you can say about Kyoko “Kyon Kyon” Koizumi is that her shows always seem to feature some pretty terrific theme songs. This is, of course, no small part due to the fact that she inevitably sings the theme songs for the dramas she appears in herself! HAHAHA, that’s not always true, but with shows like Mada Koi wa Hajimaranai (featuring Beautiful Girls) and Boku ga Kanojo ni, Shakkin Oshita Riyuu (featuring Tsuki Hitozuku), it just SEEMS that way! But out of all of them, the one nearest and dearest to my heart is the song FOR MY LIFE from Kyokochan’s drama RENAI KEKKON NO RULE!
Kokiku 8/1999 announcement!
For My Life is SUCH a great little song, and I’d even wager that if push came to shove, I’d even say that it was my very favorite song from Kyoko, ever! Being the theme song from one of my very favorite TOP TEN dramas of all time doesn’t hurt, either! ‘Cause as much as I loved the song, the drama was JUST as GOOD!!!
“Renai Kekkon No Rule is the story of an average but goodhearted man named Koichi who’s just looking for someone who he can spend time with, a “nice girl”, if you will. He goes on a dating-service meeting, and meets the girl of his dreams in Asako (Koizumi). They seemingly hit it off, much to Toshiro’s delight, but it all comes crashing down when he realizes SHE has no interest in seeing HIM!

Fate seems to have other plans, however, and time after time the two cross paths and before you know it, they are thoroughly intertwined in each other’s lives and affairs, both literally AND figuratively! Along with Toshiro’s overbearing relations and Kyoko’s meddling co-workers and friends, it’s a crazy mish-mash of plotting, deception and…falling in love!!!

The actors in this show are all top notch, with a cast that includes Koizumi Kyoko and Yanagiba Toshiro as the leads, with an incredible supporting cast filled out with Kashiwabara Takashi, Koyuki (in her first ever drama!) and even Hikaru Nishida as the young love of Toshiro’s FATHER!
But the one that really takes the CAKE in every scene she’s in just HAS to be Kobayashi Satomi, whose sarcastic and dramatically helpless attitudes both overpower AND assist Kyoko in her situations, at times being a dominating force in Kyoko's life, then becoming needy and pathetic at the drop of a pin!
The formula of the show would usually go like this: There would be a 5-8 minute opening scene or recapping scene and then it would have a computer print out a statistic based around the situation of the current scene. Like the one I have uploaded here, In this opening sequence, Kyoko’s lamenting that she didn’t have the guts to tell her father she isn’t getting married because he’s so happy about it. Then the computer beeps on and types up: 50% of parents want to see their children get married…then the hands of a clock would turn and it would go right into the theme song!
Folks, I just gotta say, this opening is a MASTERPIECE!!! Featuring the characters playing out a happily married life, the sped-up antics of Kyokyon and Yanagiba layered over crayon cartoon backdrops PERFECTLY captures the fun and zaniness of the show, and I love how even in the beginning credits Satomi Kobayashi’s stealing the scenes, first as a cat stowaway, and then cheering as the sun is ALSO emblazoned with her features, much to the chagrin of Kyonkyon and Toshiro!

Each time I watched that fun beginning, I noticed more and more “fun” things that you just couldn’t catch all at once- like when they’re packing the suitcase (to go to the moon!), you see things like a toy mallet which Toshiro bonks on Kyonchan’s head, then he picks up a bikini top which she promptly snatches away, then she puts on a boxing glove and punches a catcher’s mask off Yanagiba’s head, AHAHAHA, so much funny stuff crammed into this opening!!!

The song is an apt choice for the drama, as Kyoko sings about taking a chance “for her life” to go out and begin living as a professional single on her own, and the music just captures the happiness and spontaneity of the show, bouncy and sassy! But the song with the images of the credits, and you had SUCH A WINNING COMBINATION!!!

One thing that always seemed clear to me is that the actors and actresses involved in Renai Kekkon No Rule were having FUN shooting this drama, and there's no better evidence of this than this HILARIOUS NG montage clip I got off one of those NG shows.

Watch as Kobayashi Satomi bangs into tables, forgets her lines and Kyonkyon and Toshiro crack up, Nishida Hikaru forget her lines when she is distracted by crispy nori being eaten, and the hilarity the ensues when the guy who plays Toshiro's Pop keeps forgetting it's his turn to talk! TOO FUNNY!!!!
Even after all these years, Renai Kekkon No Rule remains  one of my Top Ten Japanese Dramas of all time, and as the years go by, it becomes even more and more precious to me!

The "Anchokko" Toda Erika

Erika Toda in Keizoku2 SPEC
Insanely adorable actress Toda Erika dropped in on the Arashi Boys a few weeks ago to promote her new show Keizoku2: SPEC, and as usual, a fun time was had by all!

Funny, ever since she appeared in Ryusei No Kizuna (where she stole my heart) with Nino, she's always referred to him as her "Oniichan" even in real life. She suggested that maybe it was time to stop since it had been years since the show ended, but I like how nonetheless, she seemed to gravitate towards him, standing next to him whenever the Arashi activities were about!

I was a fan of the original KEIZOKU series starring Miki Nakatani, and at first was a little disappointed that the drama wasn’t really a sequel per se(as I recall, Nakatani’s character died in the original series, so it’s not like it could have been a real continuation, anyway) and instead was about a new team that did the investigating of paranormal cases a la X-FILES. At least they still had Ryu Raita as the arare-peanut eating section chief.

My lack of interest in the show changed when I read hamanosilence’s blog and found that it starred Erika as a slobby genius investigator with zero social skills and a penchance for pigging out… In the back of my mind, I made a mental note to check this drama out when it got around to getting subbed. It wasn’t until she made her appearance on Himitsu No Arashi Chan that my interest was renewed!
as Saya Toma in KEIZOKU2 SPEC
In the show, Erika’s character Saya eats a lot of gyoza, and , having made that note, Sakurai Sho found a gourmet gyoza shop that offered up 70 different kinds of gyoza for them to all try. While they didn’t spend all that much time on that segment, I DID get two perfectly cute screencaps of Erika happily nibbling away on her gyoza treats!
On HnA eating Natto Gyoza
After that episode was over, I IMMEDIATELY made a bee-line online to see what the status of SPEC was, subtitling-wise…and whaddaya know? Episode One was ready and UP FOR GRABS! YATTA!!!!
The first episode so far was sooooo good, Erika as the deliciously eccentric Toma just absolutely stole every scene she was in, sooooo cute and funny watching her schlepping around like a dirtier Columbo, reeking of Gyoza and garlic, you just GOTTA LAUGH!!

PS: The only thing that didn't sit right with me was the new theme song.
The song from the original Keizoku was the hauntingly beautiful Chronic Love, sung by Nakatani Miki herself, and the mysterious, lilting melody really matched with the paranormal theme of the show. In Keizoku SPEC, however, that song by the Ricecookers (wth?) sounds more like Jack Johnson singing Curious George ditties while sipping pinacoladas under a palm tree. Not a match AT ALL!
