Lone Agent and Cub: "Spy Family"

As some of you may know, one of the things that first got me into everything J-Pop related was the seminal anime series Tenchi Muyo back in 1995, which launched me into a love of J-dramas and J-pop that has lasted to this day... I must confess however, that, (shows like Chibi Maruko Chan aside), I haven’t really watched any anime series proper since! Oh, sure, I’ ve seen dozens of animated movies and specials, but for a regular, week-by-week series, I was severely short!
But I began hearing the buzz about a popular manga that was getting the anime treatment a few months back, and when it finally started airing and not one but TWO of my friends STRONGLY recommended the show to me, I knew I had to make some time to check it out!
The anime was a little show called “Spy Family”, featuring a worldly “master of disguise” secret agent codenamed “Twilight”, who is tasked with getting close to a politician named Donovan Desmond. However, Desmond rarely appears in public, and the only time he ventures out is to attend his child’s school functions.
Thus Twilight is ordered to create a family of a wife and child, get said child into the same prestigious school Desmond’s child attends, and use his cover as a doting father to get to know him. Twilight immediately creates a new alias “Loid Forger” to go by, and secures a flat to base his operations out of, But then comes the hard part: getting someone to play his child!
He visits a seedy orphanage (where he feels the children may be easier to manipulate) and tells the  shady caretaker that he’s looking for someone bright. He is then introduced to Anya, a strange little girl who gives the caretaker the creeps.
Sensing right away that this potential adopter is looking for intelligence, Anya quickly grabs a crossword and, grabbing a pencil, completes the puzzle in a flash!
And without missing a beat, Twilight says, “OK, I’ll take her!” She seems like a kid too good to be true, but what he doesn't realize is that Anya is clairvoyant and can figure out everything she needs to say and do to appease him so he will adopt her!
Taking her home with him, he instructs her, “OK, from this day on, I’m your Father”, and Anya is quick and delighted to immediately call him “Papa!”
Looks like things will work out, if only he can get Anya to do some STUDYING! He is adamant that she adhere to homework because she just HAS to pass the tests and get accepted! But Anya hates studying and frequently balks on his orders!
There is a deeper reason for her hatred of studying- When delving into Anya’s past, Twilight’s contact Franky tells him that there is no information about this girl before the orphanage...
...and in fact, we will find out that Anya came from an unnamed institution by a team of scientists who had her studying day and night honing her skills!
But Twilight/Loid knows nothing of this, and is on pins and needles as Anya is set to take that fateful entrance exam! Of course, Anya eventually passes with flying colors, and in that instance, Loid forgets that she is a prop for his mission, and swoons with pride for her!
He has always intended that once the mission is over, Anya will be returned to the orphanage, but as anyone who’s seen movies like Despicable Me know, the inevitable bonding between the two may be harder to sever than he thinks!
Next mission: Find an appropriate woman to play Loid’s wife and Anya’s Mommy!!!
Like I said, the initial set-up of Spy Family is a tried and true formula, most popularly used in the highly succesful “Despicable Me” movies, but somehow Spy Family really makes it their own! I was already warned by friend how doggone ADORABLE Anya was gonna be, and holy HECK, she is heartbreakingly sweet and STEALS every scene she's in!
Also quite a lot of terrific action/fight scenes, particularly when Loid is using his skills to beat down the bad guys (especially when they decide to kidnap Anya!) and I expect a lot of espionage stuff mixed in with the wacky hijinks!
WELL, so far it’s been entertaining as HELL!!! It’s up to episode 4 so I’ve got a lot to catch up on, so I'd better get back to it!
Promises to be a GOOD one!!
