Favorite J-Pop Singles: Amuro Namie / Try Me

I used to go over to my friend Dano’s house to watch Japanese music shows on NGN like POPJAM and Music Fair, but probably our favorite show was HEY HEY HEY, where we got to see not only the latest acts, but got updated on the Top Ten Chart Action as well (with Video clip accompaniment!)

Back then we were primarily into CoCo but there was this one act that appeared regularly on Hey3, and that was SUPER MONKEY’S (complete with a grammatically incorrect apostrophe) featuring cute and sexy Amuro Namie as the lead singer!

“Try Me” was the latest single from the girls and so we got to see them quite a few times doing the songs on various shows, and as all the outfits rocked, it was hard to choose a favorite! In the end, it came down to the dance moves: Throughout the song, Namie would swivel and gyrate her hips to the music, and no better glimpse of this action was to be seen than in this HEY HEY HEY performance- the gals are all dressed in black, and Namie’s duked out in these sexy-ass leather shorts which REALLY showed off those moves!!! Man, did we watch this performance over and over!

Later would come other singles like Stop The Music and the incredible CHASE THE CHANCE, totally solidifying  Amuro and the Super Monkeys as one of my favorite j-pop artists of all time!

In an interesting side note, I remember there was this one time when a girl was trying to teach the Waratte Iitomo gang how to speak English phrases, and the one she was using was “Can I try This Cap On?” When trying to explain the word “Can”, Nakai Masahiro said, “Oh, like Can You Celebrate?” Yes! Then when they got to the word ”Try”, Nakai once again perked up and said, “Oh, like Try Me?” AHAHAHAHAHA
