Favorite J-Pop Singles: Karasawa Toshiaki & Kiki Kirin / Futari No Subete

AHAHAHA, this next one is a really FUN one! As the theme song for the Karasawa Toshiaki / Kiki Kirin drama KAGAYAKE! RINTARO, the story about the life and times of a earnest young business man living with his feisty mother as he tries to balance work and getting married, FUTARI NO SUBETE is the PERFECT opening for each episode!
Besides being a terrifically catchy song and danceable as hell, the theme song FUTARI NO SUBETE had the added bonus of being both sung AND performed by the fun two co-stars themselves! Each episode began with a little teaser for the show which usually ended with the two having some wacky, light-hearted argument before the the drums and synthesizers kicked in and the song started!
As the title suggests, the song FUTARI NO SUBETE is all about how great the two of them are together, the Ultimate Pair! As the two sing and grasp each others’ hands, wildly boogying down against the backdrop of a computer-generated cabaret show, you immediately get the “feel” of the show: silliness mixed in with the tender affection each has for each other. And those slow-motion clichéd SMAP dance moves at the end never fails to seal the deal!

Kagayake Rintaro was one of the very first dramas I watched on my own (without the suggestion of anyone else) and was the very first time seeing both Karasawa Toshiaki, Kiki Kirin AND awesome Esumi Makiko. Though I would see Kiki Kirin only sporadically in later years (cracked me up in the Kyoko Fukada movie Kamikaze Girls!) Karasawa Toshiaki and Esumi Makiko would go on to become some of my favorite actors!

Crush Of The Day: Ishihara Satomi

Ishihara Satomi appearing in Himitsu No Arashi Ranking Derby
Ishihara Satomi visited the Arashi Boys for a second time, this time as the guest in the always hilarious ARASHI RANKING DERBY Corner, where they get asked a question and  must rank the boys in order according to their choices. The question for this particular "race" was which one of the boys would you choose as your boyfriend, and I have to say that when Satomi came out, I was STUNNED by how frickin’ GORGEOUS she was!
in Tobo Bengoshi
You see, I’ve been watching the crime drama TOBO BENGOSHI, and as the daughter of a man who is seemingly murdered by the man she’s going out with, Satomi’s character is soooooo distraught and morose, I forgot how attractive she really is, and started to think of her as this depressed, mopey girl!
As soon as she stepped out onto that Ranking derby corner, however,  I was instantly reminded of her beauty, and what’s more, I'd forgotten how much FUN she was! As she ranked each boy, she made little comments about why they would work out or fail the test,  and she had everyone just cracking up with her curt and sassy comments, sooo funny!
Satomi was  so cute here, you can see why any guy in his right mind would want to be chosen, but, (as her first appearance in Arashi’s VIP Room a few years back revealed) she seems like she’d be an extremely hard person to please in a relationship!
Satomi's first appearance on Himitsu No Arashi in the VIP Room
During the course of the VIP ROOM interview, they asked her about various things she'd like (or dislike) in a relationship. However, as each reply came out, the boys found themselves more and more amazed by her answers!

The interview starts off pretty normally. When talking about attentiveness in a relationship, Satomi said she would want her boyfriend to be the kind of person who would to drop everything and see her if she asked him to, no matter what he was doing. When Nino asked what if he had to work late, like til 2 in the morning, she said they could get together after, til 5! "But then he wouldn't sleep!" She said that when he's busy, she wants him to be MORE busy!
Then they asked if she'd like it if her boyfriend was passionate about a hobby.Arashi was quite taken aback to find her answer was NO! She said: "I only want him to be passionate about work! If he had a hobby, he wouldn't have time for me!" The boys were like WHOA!
Next up was: "Would you be happy if your boyfriend noticed your clothing or hair?" Her answer was a resounding No, much to the boys shock. She explained: I'd ask him, "Why are you looking so carefully at me?"To which Nino gave a big YABAI!
YaBAI!!!
LOL! Then they ask her if she'd be OK with her boyfriend having female friends, of having dinner with  female co-worker. They should have seen the answer coming, which was a big OF COURSE NOT! To which a BEMUSED Matsujun quipeed, "CRAP! Satomi's Interesting!"
What About Meals with Female friends?
Probably a Fail!
Matsujun: CRAP! Ishihara Satomi's INTERESTING!
Finally they ask her is she'd like it if her boyfriend were fashionable. Naturally, her answer again is NO!  She says, "I'd ask him, Do you need to pay that much attention to it?" HAHAHA, at this point Matsujun gives up, saying, "If even being fashionable is a fail, I don't know what's GOOD!"To which a gigglingly embarassed Satomi covers her face...! LOL
AHAHAHA, too funny! Ah, watching the look on the guys' faces as Satomi-chan laid down the law was HILARIOUS! But it was all in fun, of course, and they still had a great time on that episode, and now, SHE'S BACK ON THE SHOW, bringing that same old SASSINESS, looking much more grown up and womanly than ever, too! TOO CUTE!

Funny, I had just been telling Car that it was time for me to get back to watching Reinoryokusha Odagiri Kyoko No Uso, that quirky drama starring a positively luscious Satomi as a would-be psychic... (I'd started watching awhile ago but put on the backburner as I waited for the rest of the episodes to get subbed) with this sudden SURGE in Satomi-Love upon me, you can BET I’ll be jumping right back into that one right away!

My KOKIKU Collection

Times have sure changed regarding watching Japanese dramas. Back in the day, you had but two channels to choose from here in Hawaii (local Channel KIKU or pay-channel NGN), and in the days before the internet, the sole place you could get announcements and information about the Japanese shows and it’s airtimes was the KOKIKU Magazine.

Kokiku! That nifty little local publication focusing on Japanese shows and events- the magazine that gave you the details of each show on the air, cast member information, episode synopses, and (if you were lucky) maybe even a picture or two from your favorite show!

Though KOKIKU had been around since the mid 70’s, it wasn’t until I got turned onto the wonder of Japanese dramas in late 1995 that my drama viewing increased enough to warrant picking up the KOKIKU each month for myself. And even then, when I began buying it, it was sporadic at best (I even missed out on the wonderful cover with Emi Wakui in Pure, shimatta!) but then LONG VACATION came along and my love of Japanese dramas just EXPLODED and became the high point of what I consider my “golden age” of J-drama watching!

Once that happened and Japanese Drams became my life, KOKIKU became my most important source of information for everything I needed to know about my beloved Japanese shows! Every third week of the month was spent in anticipation of the next issue, wondering: Who would be on the cover? What exciting new shows would NGN and KIKU be picking up? All these answers waited for me at the local Shirokiya each month!
Additionally, with the two nihongo channels’ timeframes virtually overlapping each other, KOKIKU became valuable tool you needed in order to juggle your viewing schedule between NGN and KIKU! As you can see here, I’d have to use highlighter pens to coordinate my j-drama watching plan of attack for each week! And, crap, look at all those awesome shows going on in October of 1996: Long Vacation, Nurse No Oshigoto, Hideyoshi, Himawari, Hoshi No Kinka, Shinkon Nari…MAN!
My 1995 Issues:
My 1996 Issues:
My 1997 Issues:
My 1998 Issues:

My 1999 Issues:
 My 2000 Issues:

Beginning around, oh…late 1999 or so, I began to get bored with most of the shows out there, and began to drift away from  j-dramas as a whole.  By 2000, I was hardly watching any Japanese shows, and by the time NAOMI and MONA LISA HOHOEMI (among the last of the "golden era' shows I watched) wrapped up, I was only picking up KOKIKU out of habit than any interest in j-dramas, and by April of 2001 I gave it up.

My Kokiku Issues 2001-2005

From there, I only picked up the January New Year’s Issue of each year for the Kohaku Uta Gassen and Record Taisho information of the airtimes and the musical guests… and then by 2006, with the advent of the internet, started getting all my information online instead.

For awhile there, I didn't watch any japanese dramas, and for the next eight years or so, I watched maybe only six or seven shows in total, if that! It wasn't until a chance viewing of the cute Ayase Haruka drama HOTARU NO HIKARI online (streaming) in 2009 that jump-started my j-drama watching passion, a love that continues to this day!

Thus began the new phase of Japanese drama watching: I (like most people) get and watch all my shows off of the internet (whether by download, torrent or stream), and all the information, airtimes, episode synopses and drama photos I need are all at my fingertips! I wonder how many viewers out there know how lucky they are to have everything just a click away! Sure, things are much much easier now, but MAN, you will never be able to replace those days of running to Shirokiya and the excitement of seeing the crisp, brand new issue on the stand!

The Shirokiya I used to pick up my issues of Kokiku was at the Pearlridge Shopping Center, and though that one is now long-gone, the Ala Moana Mall still has one, and visiting the shop last night, I was quite pleased to see that both KOKIKU and its entertainment-equivalent Eye-Ai are still being published today!

Beautiful Assassin: Erina Mano as SPEC #7

Just wrapped up Episode 7 of Keizoku 2: SPEC and besides continuing to blow me away with each chapter, this past episode had the additional entertainment of having Erina Mano as the latest Super-Powered SPEC, this time a adorable girly-girl named Satori who can scan people’s thoughts!
She arrives at the headquarters of  the Keizoku Team to find out the info they have of another known SPEC named Reizen (played with wacky fervor by Tanaka Tetsushi) whom has the supposed gift of clairvoyance. The agents try to avoid her mind probe, but Sebumi can't fight it off, and she gets the info she needs!

This leads to this one HILARIOUS scene where Satori’s trying to extract information out of Reizen after she's captured him, and he’s trying to clear his mind of any thoughts and begins reciting Buddhist chants to occupy his mind…He’s furiously chanting while Satori smirks and says he can’t keep up this forever and will sooner or later crack.
He continues the chanting, and you have to laugh as the phrases slowly become the lyrics to “Ponytail to ShuShu” and it’s at this point she turns to him and says, “Eh? AKB? Sing HELLO PROJECT instead!!” AHAHAHAHAHA!
LOL! And yet, despite so much wackiness in the show, the ending of this episode still managed to knock me out with SUCH an INTENSE CLIFFHANGER! Amazing how this show manages a perfect balance of Silliness and Seriousness!!! Can't wait for the next episode!!!!

Keizoku2:SPEC Gearing Up!!!

I have to say that the supernatural thriller KEIZOKU 2: SPEC is shaping up to be a massive, epic storyline along the lines of HEROES or the 4400, those promising (yet sadly ultimately unfulfilling) series about everyday, mundane people who have been gifted (or cursed) with strange superhuman powers, hunted down by and battling against others with the same.

When I first started watching SPEC, I was expecting it to be  like the original series, a low-key take on weird and unusual cases, and SPEC starts off  in pretty much the same way, but within five minutes, the show exploded and took a complete left turn, turning into a show more like a Superhero Comic with its super-powered individuals (SPECS), shady government agents and Colorful Villains…truly an original drama in the influx of generic crime dramas lately!
When we are first introduced to Erika Toda’s Toma character, she’s so eccentric and goofy, one thinks the broken arm must be nothing more than proof of her clumsiness, but when a villian mysteriously tells her , “What happened to your left arm…I know the truth”, you realize there is more to the story than just a prop. So as each episode goes by, you become more and more obsessed with THAT backstory.

At the end of the first episode, we are introduced to a slight, quiet boy (Kamiki Ryunosuke) with an evil streak in him and the apparent ability to stop time and deflect bullets, among other things. Who is this boy and why does he appear in front of the other SPECS at the moment of their demise? No one knows, but another twist is introduced when Toma ‘s viewing to security camera for the latest episode’s killer, and the boy appears for a split second and Toma curses under her breath: “Ninomae!!!!” Holy Crap, she KNOWS him? What’s THEIR connection?
Finally, Toma is regularly visited by a young man (played by Yu Shirota) while she’s dining on her daily meal of garlic gyoza, and by his familiarity and words, is obviously her boyfriend, or at least ex-boyfriend. His actions indicate he is hurt by her cold shoulder attitude towards him, and one wonders what story lies there.
Well, Episode 5 came along, and DAMN, I got the answers to all three of those questions and MORE! Told via flashbacks, you get a HUGE slice of What the story is all about, and even better, it even made the as-yet-unrevealed parts of the backstory seem even MORE intriguing! CRAP, this drama ROCKS!

More Himitsu No Arashi-Chan Goodness

Thanks to the fine folks at AngelDevils and Refrain Subs (two of the best Arashi Fan-Subbing teams out there along with Ao Ni Michi) I was able to watch two terrific translated episodes of Himitsu No Arashi -Chan's V.I.P. Room, featuring two actresses that I really like, Yukie Nakama and Michiko Kichise!
Both of these episodes were extremely interesting and FUN! Some guests are more lively and relaxed when they appear on the show, and it's times like these that make for an exceptional show! Yukie chatted up with the boys in her usual calm and dainty demeanor, while Michiko Kichise heated things up with her uber-sexiness!
Ahh, I've said it time and again, but what a winning corner they've got here! I can only dream of the day when Asami Mizukawa makes it onto this platform!!! Whoa, that will really make my day!

Suteki Na Yume

Last night I dreamed I was marrying Asami Mizukawa. WOW what an awesome dream THAT was! As the cliched saying goes, "It all seemed so REAL!" We were at a Japanese Tea House and were shaking hands with friends and relatives there to wish us a happy marriage...the feeling of holding her and laughing and talking to her seemed so real, and then of course that was when I woke up! D'OH!
(Cue "I Had Too Much To Dream" by the Electric Prunes...)

On The NHK 100 Yard Line

Just reached episode #100 for both  Churasan AND GeGeGe No Nyobo!
And as you can see by the screencaps, the 100th mark celebrated a big "Important Event", with Eri marrying Fumio-kun in Churasan, and Fumie and Shigeru starting up Mizuki Productions in GeGeGe No Nyobo.

Back To Keizoku2: SPEC

Back when KEIZOKU2: SPEC began airing and there were only a few episodes subtitled, I watched the first episode and then decided to wait until the entire series was subbed before watching the rest of 'em, happily the time has come and now I am enjoying the fun and zaniness that IS Keizoku 2!

I mentioned back here how much FUN Erika Toda’s character of Toma was, and my entertainment and love for this wacky and entirely different personality is only growing as each episode goes by! Sadly, I’ve been reading a lot about viewers who don’t like Erika Toda in this show, citing her performance of Toma as forced, phoney and inconsisent. I dunno, I think it’s such a breath of fresh air from some of the more generic roles she’s been in, such a joy to watch Erika in her ALL-OUT-OVER-THE-TOP eccentricity! Erika’s just amazing in this role…how can someone looks so Cute and Adorable AND Slobby and Stinky at the same time? AHAHAHA
PS: That theme Song by the Ricecookers has still not ingratiated itself onto my subconscious, and speaking of Rice Cookers, looks like Erika's been getting her face involved with one in the above picture AHAHAHA!

NHK Asadora Poll

Goo/NTT DoComo recently polled viewers about their favorite actress starring in NHK Morning Dramas from 1991-2000, and I was pleasantly surprised to see my favorite asadora AGRI coming in third! Admittedly, actress Misato Tanaka (as the titular heroine Agri Mochizuki) wasn’t anywhere near the top two (Nanako Matsushita and Takeuchi Yuko, who both pulled numbers in the 6000’s), but with a decent 1823 votes managed to show that there are still people out there who remember and love this drama as much as I do!
From Tokyohive:

Who is your Favorite Morning Drama Heroine? (1991~2000)

01 – 6,139 votes – Matsushima Nanako (“Himawari” – 1996)
02 – 6,021 votes – Takeuchi Yuko (“Asuka” – 1999/2000)
03 – 1,823 votes – Tanaka Misato (“Aguri” – 1997)

FWIW: My CoCo Song Rankings!

Looking for my CoCo Song Rankings on my HD, I was  surprised to realize that it had been so long since I had updated it, I no longer even had a word document file of it! Locating the last typed and printed out list, I saw that the last time I’d updated the ranking was in May of 1996!!!

In that time, so many things have happened, not LEAST of which is the acquiring of a whole slew of new Concert and video footage via the internet explosion of YOUTUBE and Online Trading! So much “new” insight to the songs we’d already knew and loved, it was inevitable that some of the songs would move around on the list.

And of course, the BIGGEST factor is TIME itself. It’s been over 15 years since I last made the list, and my music tastes have changed and, hopefully, expanded, making me see all the music I’ve loved (and not-so-much-loved) in a new and appreciable light. Going through the list anew, I found many songs that I’d LOVED before have become milder, while songs that I once thought were only “So-So’ have moved up to become true favorites.

I guess that’s natural for just about any group you love. When you are first getting into them, everything is fresh and fantastic, and usually the latest acquisition is the “hot” item of the moment, but once you’ve had a few years to examine the artist’s body of work as a whole, you begin to see the ones that have stood the test of time and have become engrained in your heart.

Ahhn~ enough waxing philosophically, I’ve spent a whole week re-examining the tracks and a whole evening re-typing this list, it’s time to unveil the artifact! See the songs that have moved up, and moved down, and also take notice of the fact that those questionable tunes off of that zany SAMPLE BATTLERS TOKYO that were at the bottom of the list have not budged one inch over the years- there’s SOME THINGS that not even TIME can make better! LOL!
