A K-Drama Lesson in Futility?

Kim Ji Won as Mean Girl Rachel
Argh, As I’ve mentioned before, the only real reason I’ve been watching the Park Shn Hye drama The Inheritors/The Heirs is for Kim Jiwon, but CRAP, I’m already up to episode 6 and so far her character of Rachel is still the same shallow and petty girl she was in the beginning.
Seriously, every time I think that there’s been a pivotal moment where I think Rachel has grown or at least changed motivations, in the very next scene she’s ALWAYS back pulling the same old clichéd one-dimensional rich-bitch “bullying” on poor Eun-Sang. This is getting SO OLD!
Park Shin Hye as Eun Sang
Really, it’s at the point where I’ve got to talk to someone who’s already seen the rest of the episodes so far, ‘cause if Rachel’s going to be like this throughout the entire series, I’d really rather bail than waste more time watching it. Sigh.

by not only  a snippy Yoo Rachel...
But a snobby Lee Bo Na as Well!!!
Aw, like I said earlier, I really thought Kim Jiwon’s character had a lot of promise at first, even though she played the clichéd bullying girl, I really thought they’d develop on that. But dammit, so far, nothing.
And while we’re at it, I might also add that Krystal’s character as equally snooty girl Lee Bo Na hasn’t developed any, either, LOL…

Still All About Kim Jiwon

Kim JiWon as Yoo Rachel
I began watching the much-talked about new show “The Heirs/The Inheritors”, solely for cutie Park Shin Hye and super kewl Krystal of f(x) fame but I have to say that as the show went on, I began to realize that I didn’t really like any of the main characters- they were either rich and spoiled (like Kyrstal’s character) or poor and belligerent (Park Shin Hye). Throw in all the selfish and/or apathetic dudes in the show and I was ready to stop watching….Then SHE appeared onscreen, and WOW, did it INSTANTLY become another ballgame! SHE was none other than Ms Kim Ji Won, that pretty actress who stole my heart in TO THE BEAUTIFUL YOU, and MAN, was she DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS here!
If you recall back when I was watching TTBY, Kim Jiwon was the ONLY character I had any real sympathy with, and once again here in THE HEIRS, she is the one that I instantly sympathized with. I don’t know why that is, but something about the way Kim Jiwon plays her roles always makes me like her and want good things to happen to her!
In THIS particular show, Kim Ji won plays the character of Yoo Ra Ee “Rachel”, who is caught between her mother’s questionable marriage to a bigwig and her soon-to-be-stepbrother and an aloof fiancé bumming it off in Sunny California. This leads her to the shores of the US, where she has a brusque brush with Park Shin Hye (who is there to meet up with her “successful” older sister), and WOW, their rapport is so good, both so catty and sassy to each other, I instantly though, HEY, are these two girls going to end up comrades in the fight against all this serial snootery? I NEEDED TO SEE WHERE this story was GOING!!!!

Busted!
Eunsang pretending to be Japanese to avoid Rachel's Scolding!
Aw, but as soon as I jumped into Episode two, I could see that Kim Jiwon’s role was going to YET AGAIN be just another “foil” against the main girl character. ARGH, how can they take such an intriguing character and turn her into such a cliché? Shucks, they took such care with her introduction, I felt she was going to be a sub-heroine or at least someone inspirational to the plot, instead we get “mean jilted ex-girlfriend…AGAIN! DARNS!
Can I still keep up with this show if they continue to write her as a shallow character? I’m not sure, but MAN, one thing I’ve said many times is how much I love a girl dressed in pretty outfits and as the jet setting socialite Rachel, Kim Jiwon is ALWAYS dressed to the nines, looking totally SEXY and alluring, GAHHHH, I can hardly stand it!!!!

It's All About Kim Ji Won

Kim Ji Won as Seol Han-Na in To The Beautiful You
I only began watching the Korean version of Hanazakari Kimitachi E AKA “To The Beautiful You’ when I found out f(x)’s resident supercutie Sulli was playing the part of the lead “ Horiikita Maki” guy/girl part, but I have to say, as I finish watching episode 10, that my hands down favorite actress in this production just HAS to be Kim Jiwon, playing the part of the evil girlfriend protagonist Seol Han-Na.
Above and Below: Flawlessly playing the part of the "Bitchy Girlfriend"
A stock charater like the “demanding, selfish girlfriend of the Hero” is made to be a one dimensional throwaway character, but something about Kim Ji Won’s portrayal of Han-na makes her totally sympathetic in my eyes, and at times I hate knowing that her destiny is to be cast aside to make way for the big “happy ending” of Minho’s TaeJoon and Sulli’s Jaehee finally getting together!
I don’t know if the directors/screenwriters fo the show accidentally made her too likeable or if Jiwon herself is turning Seol Han-Na into a strong character by her terrific acting, but I think her scenes are the ones that are totally moving the story for me, in the latest episode, she was just breaking my heart!! Such an awesome lil actress- Can’t wait to see what happens next!
