Iyo Matsumoto “Sweet 16 Box Set”: Third Time’s the Charm!!!

My Journey Tracking Down My Iyo Matsumoto "Holy Grail"
Or: An Essay of Unmitigated Irritation!

Though I do like some of the newer J-pop music coming out, most of my recent favorite music have been older acts that I’m only discovering now, like Eriko Tamura, Yukiko Okada, Yuki Saito, etc,  and among them, one of my HUGE faves has become Iyo Matsumoto!

I’ve been fortunate enough to have found wonderful J-pop forums who share their MP3 recordings so newbies like me can check them out and find out which artists really suit us, but sadly when you really dig an act, you usually find that when you want to actually go out and BUY their CDs, they are all out of print! And so it was with Iyo Matsumoto.

I got into Iyo sometime around 2018, and by 2019 I was already a hardcore fan of her music- So much that I desired to own some of her music on real, physical CDs! Call me old-fashioned, but when I really love an artist or work of music, mere MP3s just won't cut it- I need to be able to HOLD the album in my hands to CHERISH!

But even then, It was SO HARD finding stuff of any 80's artists, much less any of Iyo’s original CDs. And when I DID find one, it was very, very expensive indeed. I’d had the luck of getting a few of them over the years, but there were still more albums in her catalog I needed!  Longtime readers of this blog know my struggles!

There were other reasons to want these discs besides pride of ownership. Among the MP3 files I had downloaded, several of the files I’d acquired had minor issues with them- Both “Sugar Rain” and “Tenshi No Baka” had corrupted tracks (the latter still playable but the former so corrupted I couldn’t even hear the song!) and there was a strange issue with “Only Seventeen” in that every song was mislabeled, and though I was mostly able to “match” the song to the title, some were just guesses. I REALLY wanted to get the “real” CDs and get decent rips from them!

In my searches I was to discover that Victor had released a box set called the “Iyo Matsumoto Sweet 16 Box”, which included ALL of Iyo's albums and all her singles and B-sides as well! WHAT! MAN, for a burgeoning Iyo fan, this was JUST the ticket!

Going on to CD Japan, I was informed that not only was it NOT in stock, it had been released in  2009, a good DECADE+ ago. So of COURSE all the regular avenues would be out of stock/out of print/No Longer Available!

My first stop whenever I’m looking for older 80s and 90’s CDs  is the usually reliable OTOKICHI PREMIUM (who have saved me time and time again!), but sadly they didn’t have the Sweet 16 Box Set in stock, and I had to try elsewhere…

Going on to Amazon Japan (where I recently was able to purchase my long-coveted Ribbon Singles Complete discs) I did find 4 sellers selling the Iyo Box Set, starting from 500 dollars  to 800 dollars and up! That was a staggering amount, but it was all moot as (usual for these sellers) the sellers would not ship to USA! Then a  thought occurred to me: I wonder if there are any international sellers on the DOMESTIC Amazon page selling the Iyo Box Set?

I continued to scroll through the sellers pages and then…BINGO!!! YES! There was someone selling the Sweet 16 Box Set!!! Selling the Box Set at the whopping price of $542.00, I was relieved to find that this seller, though based in Japan, WOULD ship to my humble home here in Hawaii and I wasted NO TIME grabbing my credit card and PURCHASING the Iyo Box Set from the vendor!! Almost immediately, I was informed that my package was on its way!

And then I waited.

And I waited.

And I WAITED.

FINALLY, after two whole MONTHS (!) I emailed the seller notifying them that I had seen neither hide nor hair of my order, to which the seller then refunded my purchase price with no questions or explanation. MAN, was I BUMMED!

After all that time invested in waiting, I wasn’t thrilled to get back on the waiting train, but when I saw another seller selling the Iyo Box Set (this time for an even higher purchase price of  $613.64), I couldn't resist the urge to try again.

You have to understand how much I wanted this Box Set!!!  I reluctantly put in my order with this new vendor and crossed my fingers!

 I waited.

And I waited.

And I WAITED.

After TWO MONTHS, I emailed the seller explaining how I had not received my order, and once again was then refunded my purchase price with no explanation. Though I was relieved to get my money back, I HAD to wonder, what the HECK was going ON??? Was there some raging Iyo Matsumoto postal worker FANATIC crawling through all the Japan imports coming through the parcel post? Were ALL Japan sellers used to 50% of their shipment disappearing all the time? Somehow I felt like I was part of some elaborate scam!

Sigh. It was time to give up.

As you can see, this was back in 2019, and I’d since given up on trying to purchase ANYTHING through the Japan vendors on Amazon. It was only with my recent great successes with Surugu-ya that I’ve become comfortable ordering  stuff from Japan again with any regularity. And wouldn’t you know it, just this past month, WHAT should come up on the Surugu-ya page listings, but the IYO MATSUMOTO SWEET 16 Box SET!!!

Not only were they selling the set (or, at least, working proxy for the seller),  but it was at a very reasonable (relatively speaking) price of 438.00, FAR cheaper than the aforementioned orders, so cheap that even with shipping and Surugu-ya’s commision, still only came out to 462. USD!!!

It was time to take a CHANCE again, and so I went ahead and put in that order! Because it was such an expensive item, I got an email from Surugaya, asking to confirm that YES,  I wanted to purchase this 400+ dollar item!

Giving the go ahead, they quickly processed my order and in days, was sent a confirmation that they had acquired the item and it was ON ITS WAY! I waited with bated breath for what ended up being a mere 3 days, and PRAISE the GODS and HALLELUJAH, my Iyo Matsumoto package came in and it is SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!

I CANNOT BELIEVE I FINALLY OWN THIS!
Aww MAN, Not only are these albums all wonderfully digitally remastered and housed in these in BEAUTIFUL paper sleeves, original booklets and even postcards, but each album comes with BONUS TRACKS not on the original releases!

Like the amazing Yukiko Okada remastered releases (which I gushed about here), each album has the associated singles and B sides from each release, and in the case of Iyo, these went from 2-3 bonus tracks to an AMAZING 6 extra songs, WOOWWWW!

As any Noriko Sakai fan knows, Victor Records  took care of Singles and B-sides with colelctions called “CD FILE” which packages all the “loose” tracks from any given release and pout it onto hard disc for the fans. In my searches for Iyo Cds, I was able to get my hands on some of her CD FILE collections, so I DID have a FEW of these bonus tracks, but even there, the songs HERE are remastered, so it's a TOTAL win!

Ahhhhhh~ Been spending the weekend going through each album song by song (and re-ripping them for my Iphone) and it has simply been a JOY to hear! Such wonderful, amazing music from one of my FAVE 80’s discoveries! As I went thru the catalog, I noted some things:

I had mentioned that there were a couple of albums I’d only ever had MP3 copies of

Now that I actually own the CDs of them, I am shocked to find that  besides the aforementioned “Only Seventeen” album, at least one other album has track orders completely different from he ones I’d downloaded years ago. I don’t know WHY the Mp3s I had before were in such discombobulated order, but I have to say that since those were the ones I learned the albums from, they are, in my mind, still the SUPERIOR VERSIONS! It’s VERY maddening to listen to the REAL CDs and have the songs in such mixed-up playing order!!! But at least they SOUND great!

Probably one of the BIGGEST joys is the bonus disc “For Fans Only!”, a collection featuring one side of what sounds like fan messages, but the other side had 5 songs I’d heretofore never heard, a TREASURE in this day and age where I’ve basically played every song I have of her’s to death!!!

Going online, I guess this collection has been available before, but i've never seen it.

Another HUGE surprise for me is a dazzling track called BOYFRIEND A GOGO which I’d never heard before from any of Iyo’s albums or B-Side collections. Turns out it was a song from a video game called “Beautiful Katamari” in mid 2000s! VERY catchy little tune!

As well a standalone single release called “Watashi no koe o kiite”, a

gentle song from 2009 which I’m hearing for the first time!

And one more interesting aside - I never realized that Iyo’s “Believe” was a compilation album until I saw the title song listed as one of the bonus tracks on the Sentimental Dance Club CD. It was only then that I saw that Believe wasn’t part of this CD set, and that the album was in fact made up of various Iyo singles and B-sides, all of which were presented as extra tracks here! Funny it never occured to me that it was a comp album even though her single “Sentimental Journey” was on it! At the time I just thought they threw it on as a bonus, LOL

OKAY, this is the end of a LONG and MEANDERING POST! Now, if you DON’T MIND , I’ve got to get back to my Iyo Matsumoto music!

Iyo Matsumoto Still an Idol at Heart!

Besides to massive Princess Princess Box Set, I aslo picked up the latest Bluray/DVD Concert release from the still-enduring 80’s idol Iyo Matsumoto, her 40Th ANNIVERSARY “Treasure Voice” Live!!
I had mentioned to friends many times about how much I love Iyo’s voice, though not strong or powerful, it's to me very soothing and warm. Fell in love with her tone from the first listen of "Sentimental Iyo" which she released way back in 1981, and if this concert’s any testament, she's STILL GOT that SPECIAL something!

With a small club setting (reminds me of the Blue Note Hall we have here in Hawaii) Iyo entertained a room full of new and old fans, and oh! How I wish I coulda been there!
Chatty, playful and still as doggone PRETTY as ever, Iyo sang backed by a live band including horns (which really spiced up some of the songs which were originally syynth drive), Additionally, i was surprised to hear her do some songs I didn’t think were that well-known!
While I expected her bigger hits like “Love Me Tender” “Believe” and “Sentimental Journey” (and of COURSE she did them) , I was pleasantly surprised to hear her do songs like “Shinjikata wo Oshiete”, “Dancing In The Heart”, “My Brother” and a personal BIG fave of mine, “Koi No KNOW-HOW”! She also did a few from her latest release Treasure Voice, including the classic Hiromi Iwasaki song “Cinderella Honeymoon”!
With an infectious smile, she went through her repertoire, entertaining one and all, peppering the songs with stories and encouraging the audience to do the hand moves with her! So endearing seeing this elegant woman still doing her idol dance moves onstage, showing that she’ll always be an idol in heart!

80's Manna from Japan!!!

I'm a huge fan of 80's idol Yukiko Okada and though I've gotten all her CDs in the UHQCD format, I've always wanted to have copies of her original CDs as well, Over time I'd managed to get her third and fourth albums (Juugatsu no Ningyo and Venus Tanjou, respectively) and her collection Okurimono II, but her first two albums Cinderella and Fairy had always managed to elude me...until now!
The great online collector's store OTOKICHI PREMIUM has always been a boon to obsessives such as I and I'd completed many a collection thru them (notably Nishida Hikaru, Rieko Miura and ribbon) and while perusing the site this past Christmas (hoping they had a particular Shizuka Kudo CD I'm still missing), I was HAPPILY stunned to see that they had BOTH Cinderella AND Fairy in stock!!!
WELL, I wasted NO TIME throwing BOTh of those into my shopping cart, and since I was making an order, decided to see if they had anything ELSE I needed!
They still didn't have the Shizuka CD I needed, but I DID find a TON of other CDs I wanted-Besides the Yukiko Okada Cds, I got a whole slew of Yuki Saito CDs including Axia, Glass No Kodou, Fumu, Ripple, and Pant...
...a few Yu Hayami CDs: TWIN, Shadows Of The Knight, Who's Gonna Come, and Moments.
I only recently got into Yu's music, and after falling in love with them, it was time to start getting some of her CDs!
As some of you know well, I've been trying for YEARS to get the Iyo Matsumoto Sweet 16 CD Box Set. But every time I found a seller and thought I had finally gotten it, my package would not arrive and, citing "lost in transit", my money was refunded and the deal cancelled. This happened to me THREE TIMES, from THREE DIFFERENT sellers!
I also managed to get one elusive Iyo Matsumoto CD I needed, "Believe"!
I've finally decided to give up on that and have begun to focus on getting the individual CDs. A LOT harder since Iyo CDs are so hard to come by, not only that, the Box Set had the remastered versions with bonus tracks, but it's all I can do for now.
Right Now, out of Iyo's original 13 albums, I only have three of her CDs: Believe, Tenshi No Baka  and Innocence, as well as the 40th anniversary edition of Sentimental IYO and Something IYO and also a few collections.
40th Anniversary perks aside, I'd still want to get the original Cd releases of Sentimental and Something. And even without counting those, I'll still have 8 more CDs to go, looks like this might take awhile!!!

An Iyo Matsumoto Reminder By Proxy

Iyo Matsumoto at the 2013 FNS Kayosai
Even though I’ve been a huge fan of Iyo Matsumoto and Yuki Saito in recent years, I’d completely forgotten about the time they appeared on the 2013 FNS Kayosai, and I was reminded in the strangest way- by coming across a screencap of Iyo Matsumoto at the FNS on some guy’s blog…that was STOLEN from MY original blogpost!

I’d been online looking for pictures of Iyo and when I came across the pic of her at the FNS, my first thought was, “OH yeah, she was on the FNS, I gotta re-watch that!” and then going, “HEY! That’s MY picture!!!” when I saw my “Zscan” watermark in the corner.
This was just before I’d turned my blog private. SO MANY people were just taking my content for their own blogs (not jsut pictures, sometimes entire entries and sometimes COMPLETELY, with just their “header” on top of mine!!!), I just gave up. I turned it back to public some years later but took my blog off Google search engines, which helps the online content thievery some. That's also why each entry is now tagged "Posted by Zdorama" with my address.
So in the MOST SARCASTIC way I can, I say “Thank You” to that blogger for reminding me of this wonderful FNS appearance…with my OWN picture!

Yappari Iyo Matsumoto!

Another early act that I’ve been really getting into is Iyo Matsumoto, she of “Sentimental Journey” fame and current member (along with fellow 80’s idol alum Yu Hayami) of the reunion outfit “Cutie Mommy”. Found a few of her early albums on an 80’s J-Pop forum awhile ago but only made the time to take them out and give them a spin on the ipod during my evening walks and WOW, did I love them!
Although not an exceptional singer, her genki and youthful vocals really match with the poppy 80’s music and after only a few listens, her first two albums “Sentimental” IYO and “Something IYO” had become HUGE faves of mine!
I knew all of her albums were long out of print but hoped I could find a copy thru ebay or something.  Then I remembered that Pony Canyon had recently re-released all Yukiko Okada albums in UHQCD format, and wondered if there was an off chance that Iyo's company had done something similar…and hit the jackpot!
It was Iyo’s 35th Anniversary last year, and to commemorate the milestone, they released a special package called YAPPARI IYO ’16 featuring her first two albums Sentimental IYO and Something IYO  (YES!) enclosed in a BEAUTIFUL 100 page photobook!
From the CD Japan order form I expected the booklet to be maybe 5x7 in size, but when I got it i was impressed to find it was a huge 8x12 shashinshuu filled to the brim with colorful pictures pretty Iyo in her heyday shining bright!

If that wasn’t enough, the package ALSO came with a DVD featuring a mini-documentary following Iyo as she lived her idol life promoting her early albums….
..and then LIVE performances of songs from the albums as well!
She did a bunch of my favorite songs like “sweet Inspiration” , “Love Me tender’ and of course “Sentimental Journey”, wish she could have sung songs like “Wonderful World”, “Hito Kakera no Natsu”, “Heart Collection” and ”A Boy Meets A Girl”, which are my absolute faves, but just seeing her onstage dancing and singing and looking as radiant as could be was thrilling enough!
A FINE way to celebrate a fine 80's Idol's Anniversary!
