A Time Capsule Of My Old Zdorama VOX Blog

Recently dug up something that instantly brought back memories- screencaps of my long-gone original ZDORAMA blogsite on VOXAs some of you know, I began my blog on the VOX platform in 2007, and for a good four years posted to that site until it abruptly closed in September of 2010, to which I then transferred my posts over to this GOOGLE blogger site which continues to this day!
I had actually almost forgotten what that original VOX blog LOOKED LIKE since it had been so long, and did not know I had screen-capped any images for posterity- imagine my surprise when i came across these grabs in an old Princess Princess folder on an old harddrive, gushing about my love of their awesome single "Seven Years After"!
This was an early post- September of 2008, way before I'd done any real customizing of the blog with my own banners, etc...but I guess I particularly liked that Puri Puri post or something and felt I just HAD to capture it completely- whatever reason, glad I did- it might be the ONLY visual representation I have of that old site!
I've mentioned before how much I loved the VOX blog- to this day it was still the easiest platform to work with for MP3s, Photos, Videos, etc. Still miss it al lot!

What I'm Watching Right Now

We're about halfway through the Fall J-drama season, and though this time I've only caught a few dramas, I thought I'd still take the time to note what I'm currently watching... As usual, these are listed here in order of how much I've been liking them (so far)!

Zen Ryouiki Ijou Kaiketsu Shitsu
A show I described as X-Files for D-Addicts, AARO: All-All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office continues to be my favorite show of the handful of dramas I've chosen to watch this season, with its ineresting stories and intriguing twists. And of course there's Alice Hirose, who heightens ANY situation!
Was having trouble finding subs and raws for this one, at the moment it seems to be slowly but steadily coming out, and I can only cross fingers that it continues....

Usotoki Rhetoric
Very cute drama about a peppy detective named Iwai (Ouji Suzuka) with an intuition for details and his sincere and hard-working assistant Urabe (Honoka Matsumoto)...who has the ability to tell when anyone is lying! Set in the 1940's era, the period piece alone makes it fun to watch and the characters are quite charming!

Rikon Bengoshi Spider
Maryjun Takahashi is as cool as ever as  the titular Asuko "Spider" Mikumo, the savvy divorce lawyer who uses crafty and intricate ways to ensnare her 'victims" and get her clients out of horrible unions. I only wish I didn't have to sit through the first half when they are showing the bad spouse being a jerk as I hate persecution scenarios. At least we get to see their comeuppance by the show's end!

Danchi No Futari
Still slowly working through this slice-of-life style drama following the daily goings-on of two old friends (played with impeccable  and rascally wit by Satomi Kobayashi and Kyoko Koizumi) who have moved back to the old apartment complex they lived in when they were children. Stories of cranky neighbors, minor mishaps and maladies, and the eternal woes of getting old, each episode lets you sit back and relax along with them!

Watashi wo Moratte: Koji Hen
Taking up directly where we left off in Watashi wo Moratte Tsuioku Hen, with Ryohei (Goki Maeda) seemingly dead and Natsumi (Sayu Kubota) frantically trying to bring him back, this drama had a nice wrap up, only to be revealed that it is STILL to be continued and there is yet ANOTHER part to this series to wait for! AIYAAA, how long will this go onnnnn...was a nice enough story, bot sure if it warrants THREE mini series to tell it!!!

Older Dramas I'm Finally Watching

GIFT
REALLY enjoying this one as one of the WACKIER Kimura Takuya dramas I've ever seen (and of which it's unlikely we'll ever see again!) with Kimura as an amnesiac man named Yukio working as a courier for an unscrupulous delivery agency as he tries to find out  who he is and where he came from.

CONCERTO (Kyosokyoku)
Kimura, Miyazawa Rie, and Tamura Masazaku in a VERY Soap-opera-ish melodrama which started out playful and interesting but has somehow turned into a drama more like Ko No Yo No Hate with everyone involved looking so miserable and distraught throughout. Still a compelling story, though, one I want to see through to the end~

Love Generation
Kimura Takuya and Matsu Takako romcom. Kind of enjoyed myself at first but this drama has all the early 90's trappings I detest: misunderstood feelings, mistaken embraces, and CONSTANT nonsensical breakup to makeup bickering. Becomes very tiresome to sit through, but still fun seeing everyone so YOUNG here, not jsut Kimura and Matsu but even Norika Fujiwara and Kimura Yoshino!

Dramas I Dropped:

Munou No Taka
I  has misgiving about the writing of this show from the beginning, particularly the uneven way they portrayed Takano's stupidity- from wasting time on the computer in one episode to not even understanding what a mouse was in the next, it all seemed so sloppy. While still stuck at ep.4 subtitle-wise, I've already been hearing in the forums how unsatisfactorily and aggravatingly the drama ended, so I won't waste any more time on this.

Takaramono
Checked out  for Wakana Matsumoto as a woman who is in an abusive relationship with her husband and ends up getting pregnant from a childhood love, but as I'm not a fan of cheating  spouses OR abusive relationships, there really is nothing going on for me here. Hated every character in this show, especially Kei Tanaka who I abhorred every second I had to sit through with him.

Sono Bisque Doll Wa Koi Wo Suru
As expected, I just couldn't get used to as the characters in this manga adaptation of "My Dress Up Darling. Though there are many rallying behind the choices, I think the leads (especially Riko Nagase) were horribly miscast. Gave it a shot but seeing the previews for episode 2, I realized I just loved the original manga/anime too much and opted to drop the LA.

Ano Kuzu wo Nagutte Yaritainda
I LOVE Nao but I feel like I've seen this set-up of the pushed around character wheo steps up to become a stronger person through boxing a million times, and after watching all the cliched characters (jackass boyfriend, tsundere love interest etc) I feared what was coming, and when Nao began getting the usual bossy attitude from the members at the gym, I was out.

My Diary
Another one starring an actress I really like, My Diary starred actress Kaya Kiyohara in the main role as a girl, yet I the characters all struck me as by the numbers and basic, and I found I just could not get into this.

I admit, I just haven't been "feeling it" with the shows these past few seasons and it doesn't look like there's anything on the horizon to look forward to either.

Catching Up on Some Older Kimura Takuya Dramas

My friend’s Wife has been bitten by the Kimura Takuya bug thanks to NETFLIX’s recent airing of a BUNCH of his shows, including GOOD LUCK, A LIFE, KAREI NARU ICHIZOKU, and most significantly, GRAND MAISON TOKYO, and she’s been simply "Koo-Koo for Kimura” ever since, and ready to explore more of his catalog!
“OK, My wife wants to see this “Long Vacation” show that  everybody keeps talking about!” my friend requested one day, and of COURSE I was happy to oblige! As some of you know, Long Vacation is just about my FAVORITE J-drama of all time, and the more fans I can introduce the drama to, the merrier!

I told him I’d pass Long Vacation along as well as a few OTHER Kimutaku shows I thought they’d like, and chose classics HERO, A Million Stars Falling From the Sky, and CHANGE to the mix, as well as more recent dramas "Ando Lloyd", "I'm Home", “Mirai e no 10 Count”, “BELIEVE”, and both “BG: Personal Bodyguard” seasons as well.  A good assortment of Kimura shows!

Going through my files, however, I found several of them to be lacking in quality- back when I'd originally acquired them, files were usually 250MB in size and from crude sources. Worked fine for the time, but now seemed hard on the eyes to watch. I wanted them to experience the shows as best as possible, and so took to the forums to get better quality files.

Thankfully all those dramas were up and available, and while re-downloading both HERO and CHANGE, I saw that there were a few other Kimutaku shows available that even I hadn’t seen before (he has so many it’s easy for a few to slip through the cracks!): GIFT (1997), Love Generation (1997) and Concerto (1996), so I grabbed 'em all! Began watching them right away and have been having a blast! Of the three of them the one I’m liking most is GIFT, a VERY wacky and zany affair of a man with amnesia who becomes a courier for a shady organization while simultaneously  trying to piece back his past.

High points include a VERY cute Ryoko Shinohara in an early role- funny, Ryoko was one of the first J-actresses I knew when I began watching dramas, but she plays such tuff tomboyish roles nowadays that I was taken aback by how gigglishly GIRLY she was here- flirty and OH! Such a BABE!

The biggest shocker for me though is seeing actress Mitsuko Baisho as Inspector Sakuhara- I’m SO used to seeing her as a doddering old lady in dramas, it never occurred to me that there was a time when she was an admittedly pretty HOT Lady!!!! But WOWWW, she sure is HERE! I’m not kidding-  I’ve always respected Mitsuko in her drama appearances as those Granny types, but seeing her as this cool, sexy badass character is a whole new experience!

Just LOVE whenever she's in a scene, and at this moment I'm even going to say that Sakuhara's my favorite character on the show! SO KAKKOI!!

Throw in Muroi Shigeru as Kimutaku’s outspoken boss and a sassy Satomi Kobayashi as an eccentric psychic and you’ve got a WILDLY entertaining drama!!

CONCERTO (Kyosokyoku) stars Kimura and Tamura "Furuhata Ninzaburo" Masakazu as architects competing for the affection of Rie Miyazawa. Not a big fan of infidelity and cheating dramas, but there’s so much going on in this one I can’t stop watching it! Great characters and great acting!

Rie Miyazawa in particular captivates, she’s so bubbly and cute in this one and it dawns on me that this might be the first drama I’ve seen with her as a younger girl, most stuff I’ve seen is her as an 0lder lady, playing mature wives and spinster-ey widows in shows like GuGu Gu Neko Datte and Shinhannin Flag! But she's simply a heartbreaker here, no wonder these two guys end up fighting for her....

Lastly there’s LOVE GENERATION- it’s hard to believe this is the first time I’m seeing it as this came right on the heels of Long Vacation and EVERYBODY wanted to see it! Sadly however, no station here picked it up, and unlike my friend Golden, (who soldiered through the series blind), I refused to watch it unsubbed, LOL!

Took a good 10 years til fansubbing became a thing and  a team translated it, but it still took me until NOW to get going! Watching it now, it very much seems like a continuation of Long Vacation as the two leads look exactly like they did in the previous show, though in entirely different roles, with Kimutaku as a womanizing "player" type and Matsu as a dorky spastic chatterbox! Great fun!

Speaking of Takako, when they were watching Long Vacation, my friend and his wife really detested the Ryoko character-(guess her wishy-washy naiveity grated on their nerves), but when they began watching HERO, not only did they really LOVE her character of Amamiya, they did not even realize it was the same actress who had played Ryoko! This is a TRUE testament of Matsu’s acting versatility- "We couldn't believe it was the same actress when we saw the credits!" they said with some awe and amazement!

Indeed, Amamiya stands out as one of Takako Matsu's most enduring characters, and it's feedback like this that I love hearing and what makes sharing dramas so rewarding!

LOL, and for some hilarious feedback: While talking to my friend’s wife about Grand Maison Tokyo, I mentioned that I really liked the lead actress Kyoka Suzuki, to which she said, “Kyoka Suzuki? Which actress is that, THE ONE WHO LOOKS LIKE A DUDE?” LOLOL I had to laugh and say “Ye Gads, no, THAT was international model Ai Tominaga!”

Ya gotta LOVE feedback like this HAHAHAHA
