Favorite J-Pop Singles: Nakatani Miki / Chronic Love

Miki Nakatani Keizoku Theme Song "Chronic Love"
Back in the mid-90’s when the classic David Duchovny /Gillian Anderson sci-fi series THE X-FILES was in full swing, the world of Japanese Dramas did their own little take on it and what resulted was the dark and mysterious/crime drama KEIZOKU. Unlike the more recent Erika Toda/Kase Ryo Keizoku sequel SPEC, which had more of an action/sci-fi feel to it, the original Keizoku series  was more heavily steeped in the dark, spooky side of things, and nothing made the drama seem even MORE scary than the drama’s opening theme song CHRONIC LOVE, sung by the co-star of Keizoku herself, Ms. Miki Nakatani!

Miki Nakatani was a gal whom I regarded mostly as an actress (indeed, she was one of the handful of actors that I first got to know when I first began watching Japanese shows) even though I already had an old SOUND ARENA clip of her performing as part of the super-genki duo KEY WEST CLUB, but whatever the case, after hearing the song she sang for Keizoku, I realized she was awesome at BOTH!
Listen to the moodiness of the song, Miki almost whispering the verses and choruses along with the music, gads, even now the song fills me with such utter loneliness and instantly takes me back to the general feeling of the drama, this song felt so dark that I remember when I included the song on a cassette mix, I had to follow the song with the bright and poppy “Ride On Time” by MAX to balance it and get me back in a chipper mood! LOL
Chronic Love came out when most of the single releases were still being made in the 3cm sized mini-disc with rectangular packaging, but I remember Miki’s CD single coming out in this beautiful “regular” CD sized sleeve, and what’s more, the single even came with a fold-out poster/lyric sheet!
Very Cool, though the CD single’s huge size (it was even slightly bigger than my regular CD jewel cases) made it really stick out on my shelf next to the other singles, but soon enough, just about everyone was discarding the 3cm format and soon my entire shelf was filled with  regular sized releases…!
