Duty, Now From the Future: Yui Sakuma in “Jikuu Tantei Oyu”

Yuka Sakiguchi (Yui Sakuma) is a timid OL who is constantly being berated by her insufferable boss Asakawa at work. He seems to single her out for every problem there and even when it isn’t her fault it seems she is always apologizing for it.
Over drinks with her friends one night, they realize his anger is because she slighted him when he asked her out to a dinner. She had excused herself, saying she doesn’t like coriander, but when one of her co-workers posted an image of them all enjoying it, he knew she was lying to get out of the dinner. Now she knows why she’s on his blacklist!
Meanwhile she has other things to worry about- her beloved grandmother  has been hospitalized for some time now, and just before she passes away, she calls her over to her bedside to pass a mysterious key over to Yuka.
Some time later when grandmother has passed, Yuka is getting her house in order, and it’s there she discovers a small door at the back of a closet, with a lock that matches the key she is given!
Curious, Yuka unlocks the door and steps into it…where she is instantly sucked to the other side! Before she can react, the door seals itself shut and she is seemingly STUCK there!
But where IS she? A  nervous step outside of the house gives her the shock of her life: She is back in the EDO period! WHAAT! This can’t be happening!
Rushing back into the house, she struggles to get the portal open, but it remains stuck!
Crumbling down in despair,  she sees a box with various props in it, including a wig, kimono, and money. And within it are a bunch of carefully written notes left by her late grandmother, who always intended Yuka to discover the magical portal!
In it, the notes tell her the customs of the time (No girl has short hair in the Edo period so wear this wig),etc, summing things up with, “The Edo Period is a fun place to be! Have fun!” and then, “PS: The portal will open in 24 hours!”
Well! with time to kill, Yuka eventually dons the disguise and heads out to see the sights of her hometown some 100 years + in the past!
She’s gone only a few blocks from her home when she is accosted by a desperate thief.
Her life may be in forfeit but she is saved by a dashing young man named Ukai Denzaburo (Takezai Teranosuke), a local lawman.
When she sits down to talk with him, he says, ”You must be Oyu!” Seems her Grandmother had told them all about her granddaughter in her past visits and told them to look out for her, saying she could be a help with their investigations-He often came to her Grandmother for advice, and now comes to “Oyu” for the same.
Well, she doesn’t know if she can be of any help to them, and things get worse when she discovers that Ukai’s superior as a direct ancestor of her creepy boss Asakawa!
Well, she doesn’t know if she can be of any help to them, and things get worse when she discovers that Ukai’s superior as a direct ancestor of her creepy boss Asakawa!
Overwhelmed, Yuka flees back to her time when the portal opens, but when she comes back and has to deal with the same snide belittling treatment from Asakawa, decides to go back to Edo and fight for Justice! Living life and solving crimes in the Edo Period might be FUN after all!!
Boy, these “Timeslipping Back to the Edo Period” dramas are getting more and more ubiquitous, ain’t they! But seeing as how shows like JIN and Ashi Girl are some of my favorite dramas, I’m hoping I’ll get some fun entertainment out of this one! Yui Sakuma is cute as Yuka/Oyu (dramawiki stats say I’ve seen her before in small roles over the years but she doesn’t ring a bell) so I’m definitely going to keep tabs on this one!
