Well, after 11 weeks, two of my favorite shows have finally come to an end, and that general empty feeling in your heart that comes  whenever you get too attached to these dramas has arrived! That leaves only ATSUHIME to fulfill my weekly dose of japanese dramas, and even that show won't be on forever!

  Both shows closed as well as could be expected, NIGHT KING was about right on target with a very solid ending, but I really wished we could have seen more of the kids from Dragon Zakura AFTER the Tokyo University exams. I just didn't want to leave them!

A thought, though: I wonder if Dragon Zakura and Yaoh's last episodes were actually an hour-and-a-half (as most j-doramas are) and KIKU squeezed them into hour brackets. Both shows went slightly over an hour, and if I'm not mistaken, Dragon Zakura had only ONE commercial break! That would make for more than the standard 45 minute drama...

That's all fine and dandy, but I can't help worry that they might have cut stuff out to made this timeframe work. Especially in the Dragon Zakura scenes with Yamapi and Masami....seemed like there was more, and I even think I heard a snippet of dialog start as it abruptly cut to the next scene! I guess I'll have to rent a copy of the last episode somewhere to be sure. ????

The clincher was that since both shows ran a few minutes over an hour, my DVD (which was set to SP and would fit only two hours of stuff) cut off RIGHT as the ending song to Night King ended. For a milli-second, I brethed a sigh of releif: "I Whew! JUST MADE IT! Then to my horror, there was MORE after the song! Just a 20 second afterword kind of thing, but CRAP! So technically, I'm missing the "end" of Yaoh!

J-Drama Femme Fatale: Suzuki Kyoka

So I was watching the 2006 movie “A Cheerful Gang Turns The Earth” [Yoki na Gang ga Chikyu wo Mawasu] the other day. And all through the movie, I was racking my brains trying to figure out who the lead actress was. She was BEAUTIFUL, man, some scenes I just couldn’t concentrate, she was so smokin’! It didn’t hurt that the character she was playing,cool, calm and calculating, just added to the allure of this gal!

  So I’m watching this, and in EVERY scene, I’m saying to myself “Grphgh…I KNOW who this Actress IS! Just gimme a MINUTE!” But the answer just wasn’t forthcoming! She looked so much like ALWAYS SUNSET ON THIRD STREET star Koyuki  that even though I knew it wasn’t her, that was the actress I kept coming back to. At some point, after scraping the barrel of my brain, it occurred to me that she looked ever so slightly like this actress I loved years and years ago that played Lady Oichi (Nobunaga’s sister) in the Taiga Drama HIDEYOSHI, a woman named Mitsuko Yorichika. But  wouldn’t she be too old to play this hot young gal? But then again, I said to myself, that actress had makeup and a headpiece and was done up in Feudal times in HIDEYOSHI, maybe she was a lot younger under all of that!

  But  even there, the actress didn’t look QUITE like her either! Argh, She looked SO familiar, part of me decided she must be a new actress that I’d just seen recently in some drama or movie.  BY the time the movie was winding down, I was thinking to myself, “C’mon, C’mon, get to the ending credits already!” I just hadda know! But then, guess what happened? The ending credits weren’t SUBTITLED! Agh! I rewound the credits and tried to read the japanese characters as they quickly scrolled across the screen, but the ending theme song was a very wonky song sung by Wada Akiko, and  after rewinding and hearing the song three times, I eventually gave up.

  Funny thing is,  at one point in my life I DID know exactly who the stars of the show were, because CHEERFUL GANG TURNS THE EARTH was shown here in Hawaii at the International Film Festival, and it was the terrific cast that made me want to check it out in the first place! Unfortunately, by the time we found out that the movie was showing, it  was already starting and we just didn’t have enough time to get down there.

 So I always kept in mind that when the movie came out, I would just buy it, and that’s about ALL I remembered, the only other thing I really remembered was that Osawa Takao was one of the actors in it!  So I’m watching the movie, and not only was Osawa Takao in it, Sato Koichi AND Matsuda Shota (the kid playing the new Shogun in ATSUHIME) were in it as well! Very famous actors...how did I forget! And that gorgeous mystery girl. Ah, back to my story.

  So with the movie providing no ultimate answer for me, It was off to the mighty Wikipedia site, where perusing the cast listing for Cheerful Gang finally gave me the name I was looking for…

Kyoka Suzuki!

WHA! I couldn’t believe it! That was ONE actress that never crossed my mind! I mean, granted, she WAS a really pretty actress and I DID know her pretty well back in the 90’s, but MAN, she looked SOOOOOO different from the last time I saw her! I loved her in dramas Like GAMAN DEKINAI, KIRA KIRA HIKARU, and especially AFRICAN NIGHTS, but  she had a very different look about her…Seems like she finally lost the ramen-styled hair she had before and replaced it with a stylish bob.  No wonder I didn’t recognize her!

 I was flabbergasted! WOW, Kyoka Suzuki!! I went onto the internet, and  began downloading alla these new pictures of her, damn, she looked so good! And I realized she’d adopted this “newer” look awhile ago, at least four or five years now.

 It’s a funny thing, too…She’s one of those actresses that (to Me, anyway), get just better and better looking with age. Even back in the African Nights days, I preferred that look to her  early “gravure” idol days. Which is too bad, ‘cause I don’t think you’re likely to see the mature Kyoka squeezing into a skimpy two piece bikini anytime soon, though I’m sure she CERTAINLY could pull it off!

Oh, and the Movie Itself? As you may have guessed by now, I LOVED it! The story is about these four individuals with unique powers: Osawa  is a human lie detector, Suzuki clocks off  time in her head like a computer, Matsuda can pickpocket anyone, and Sato is the charismatic talker who charms the audience/captives while the heist is  commencing. The four individuals happen to be at a bank when they are witness to a half-assed robbery, and after stopping the would -be thief, they decide THEY could do better, and become a slick crime unit making daring and theatrical robberies!

  I’ve always loved movies where a team of eccentric people who are aces at “what they do”  join together and execute perfectly planned heists, like that team at the beginning of that first Tom Cruise MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE movie, the HUDSON HAWK museum thieves, heck, even OCEAN’S ELEVEN had that spirit I’m talking about…well, CHEERFUL GANG just exudes the same stuff! Dressed in loud, flamboyant clothes, the look of the gang resembled a Sentai Group that even Ishinomori Shotaro would be proud of!

Okay, I’m off to go search for more recent Kyoka Suzuki pics.

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Hinagata Akiko / Six Colors Boy

         Since we've been talking about it in previous entries, I thought it was about time I got off my duff and ripped the single so's y'all can enjoy it!
 This was the theme song for Crayon Shinchan, or at least one of the show's incarnations. I didn't really watch the show all that much, but the ones that I did happen to catch had some other song as the theme. I think the one used during the commercials,but I could be wrong.
  Sung by Uber-Boobed gravure model Hinagata Akiko, this single was a gift from a friend who knew I dug j-pop and figured, hey, anime, what's not to love. But he didn't know that I actually already kind of liked Hinagata Akiko from various variety shows, and would dig her evn more when Morningberryz acquired  one of those "Video Magazines" of hers...truly sexy and fun!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Nozawa Aya / Tenamonda Jinsei

Visiting Dayone’s page reminiscing about MACROSS soundtrack songs made me think about a cassette a friend made for me many years ago that was just filled with various songs from selected anime shows.

   Some great ones I recall were songs like Hare Nochi Parade by Tokyo Policewoman Duo (a song I'm STILL looking for in CD or MP3!), Mouichido Love You by Hiroko Kasahara and Itsumademo by Chisato Moritaka, but by FAR my favorite track on the cassette mix was a kicking song called “Tenamonda Jinsei”, a song that I didn’t know anything about except tht it was sung by an artist named Megumi Nozawa. Or at least, that was the name of the artist that my friend scribbled on the cassette case!

   Years later, my friend got ahold of a anime compilation with Tenamonda Jinsei on it, and made a copy of the CD for me…and also pointed out that the artist was AYA Nozawa, NOT “Megumi”! Yep,even though the kanji in her name was “Megumi”, in furugana on the side, it said “Aya”…so there you go.

I still didn’t know too much about the song however, and It wasn’t until years later I came across the ANIMENEWSNETWORK pge that had some data about the song. I found that the collection my friend had originally taken the song from was a CD called “Anime Hot Wave-The Third Wave”, a 1992 release, and the Aya Nozawa song was the theme for anime show MUSASHI, THE SAMURAI LORD!

 Okay, truth be told, that still leaves me pretty much in the dark about the origins of this song...what the heck is this "Musashi Lord"? And I can't seem to find any more information about Aya Nozawa, at least on english written pages , and hey, that's probably the PROBLEM, right? But even if I type her name in japanese in the search engine it doesn't bring up much. So it goes. Anyway....

 Man, listening to this song right now, It really takes me back-  this was such a  rockin’ favorite of mine at the time, very much in the flavour of then-current rockin’ artists I loved like Nanase Aikawa, KIX-S and Be-B!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Ribbon / Deep Breath

Continuing on with my “Favorite J-Pop Singles” coverage of Ribbon’s awesome ZOKU HARLEM NIGHT JOINT concert, which helped spawn  at least seven favorite songs from the Pony Canyon Girls, including this ROCKIN little number DEEP BREATH, Ribbon’s 8^th single and the one that helped propel the girls to heights of popularity back in the day!

Deep Breath was part of the awesome Musical suite that ended side two, and in regards to track order (for those of you following this ribbon thing), came right after they performed their cool song Taiyo Ni Hi Wo Tsukete.

What I love about this live performance is that I never knew how each girl’s vocals were “layered” over each other’s, and it was such a  thrill to see them performing this one live! And ya gotta love that “Ahhh” pressing the back of their hands on their foreheads as if to say “What a Breeze it is!”

Another song off of that fateful Greatest Hits compilation MORE DELICIOUS that paved the way for my later explosion of love for Hiromi Nagasaku, Arimi Matsuno and Aiko Sato!

Night King (Yaoh 夜王)

    Just finished watching Episode #2 of “Night King” (Yaoh 夜王) starring Masahiro Matsuoka of TOKIO fame, and I have to say that it seems to be shaping up into a pretty interesting show. Probably the perfect balance of gorgeous gals (especially those of the MILF category, which I am a huge fan of) and guys (which keeps my girlfriend Car entertained, of course.)
  We’ve been big fans of Matsuoka since the days of dramas like “Love and Peace”, and were HUGE fans of the wacky “Heaven Cannot Wait” series with Masahiro and Jinnai Takanori, and were excited to catch his new show.
 Matsuoka stars as Ryosuke, a young man who has been working for about half a year at a host club called Romeo. Ryosuke has been introduced to the world of hosting through his benefactor, played by beautiful actress Rino Katase, and each episode deals with the many obstacles he must deal with on a regular basis, whether they be client problems (like pretty Mari Hoshino)  or dealing with rivals (such a Seiga, played by actor Kitamura Kazuki), everything counts as he works his way up the chain.

  His boss (played by Naito Takeshi) gives Ryosuke an ultimatum- he must become top host in three months or leave the club. What Ryo doesn’t know is that his boss has manufactured this timeframe as a favor for Miss Remi- It seems she is dying of cancer, and wishes to see her young protégé reach the top before she leaves. It’s this underlying story that strikes me the most, each episode seems really bittersweet, and I’m really looking forward to see how Ryo is going to accomplish his goals!


 When KIKU announced the show, I hadn’t heard of it before, and assumed it must be a new show , but when the credits rolled at the end, the theme song was “Mr. Traveling Man” by TOKIO, a single that places the drama at 2006, at least a year or so back!

A Song To Brighten Your Day: AAA / Music!!!

         I have to admit I wasn’t familiar with AAA the first time I saw them on 2005’s Japan Record Awards, but I’d certainly know them afterwards! They performed a rousing song called BLOOD ON FIRE that night which really impressed us- so full of excitement, and accompanied by energetic dance moves! Well, AAA (Triple A) won Best New Artist that night, and I knew we’d be hearing a lot more from them!


Comprised of 8 members including five guys and three gals, AAA (generally known to stand for ATTACK ALL AROUND) was the brainchild of AVEX TRAX guru Max Matsuura, when he handpicked various artists from his label to complete the powerful “Super” group idea of his. Featuring Naoya Urata, Takahiro Nishijima, Mitsuhiro Hidaka, Shinjiro Atae, Shuta Sueyoshi Misako Uno, Yukari Goto and Chiaki Ito , the band fused girl pop with hip hop and even a bit of Johnny’s thrown in for good measure! The band first came to prominence when they did the theme song BLOOD ON FIRE for the live action INITIAL D movie, and of course, the single went on to win the Taisho! We were hooked!


 A few months later we were in the car listening to AAA’s latest single when our kid (who was probably about 8 years old at the time) perked up and said, “This song sounds like it would be in High School Musical.” We sat back and listened again, and sure enough, it DID sound like it would fit right into the Disney Channel’s current playlist, at that!

In fact, it should be mentioned that AAA was marketed just like those New Mickey Mouse Club alumni, very easily accessible for all age markets. And did I mention how genki they were?
 Fast forward to 2008, and I’m browsing by one of my j-pop sites that feature new PVs of the latest singles, and I see they’ve got the new AAA song “Music!!!” posted up (along with the flip side / double A song “Zero”), and I quickly downloaded the Vid right away!


When I finally sat down to watch / listen to the new single, I was overwhelmed at how “happy” the song was! All bubbly and optimistic, with the chorus of  “clap your hands!” It really sounded like they were celebrating the joy of Music!



          And MAN, if I thought they sounded like J-pop versions of “High School Musical” THEN, was I surprised at how much they’d RETAINED that sound… they sounded even more like j-pop equivalents of S Club 7, complete with signature cheery refrains and dance moves! Take a listen to the tune- you’ll be glad you did!


PS: Watching the video, I noticed that they seemed to be shy a girl, and sure enough, when I checked up on it, I found that member Goto Yukari had left, apparently due to health reasons. Ganbatte, Yukari-chan, hope you make it back!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Da Pump / Rhapsody In Blue

    Among the singles I purchased in 1999 was  a song featuring a great beat called “Rhapsody in Blue” by the vocal/dance outfit called Da Pump.

 I didin’t really buy a lot of “guy group” songs back then, but I was REALLY impressed with their performance on the Kohaku Uta Gassen that New Year’s Day. Their singing and timed dance moves really got me “into” the song, and I promptly went down to the japanese record store Hakubundo on my lunch break and picked up the single later that same week!

 I remember one of my co-workers who also like J-pop [favorite band: Luna Sea] decided to accompany me on my trek to the record store, inquiring me as to just what single I was hoping to pick up, and I stuttered a bit before saying, "Er…Um..Well, that Da Pump song.” She then (to my relief) simply nodded, and said “Oh, Rhapsody in Blue? Yeah, that song is good, huh?” WHEW!

I was going to wait a while before posting this particular track, especially since I’d just recently run an entry on  SMAP a few entries ago, but when I was talking to a friend, he mentioned that he’d JUST downloaded Da Pump’s greatest Hits package “Da Best of a Pump” the night before! This to me was a great sign telling me the time was right for this post!

Favorite J-Pop Singles: Mi-Ke / Kanashiki Teddy Boy

Mi-Ke was an early 90’s idol group featuring Utoku Keiko, Murakami Haruka and Watanabe Mami. Onstage they presented a fun and wacky persona, as j-pop Idol fanpage Encyclopedia Idollica notes, “They had to be seen to be truly appreciated!”


Renting episodes of the old “Sound Arena” show for performances of Chisato Moritaka and Miho Nakayama, I came across this performance by Mi-Ke of their 5th single called “Kanashiki Teddy Boy”. Being a huge fan of groups like CoCo , Ribbon and Qlair, I was always ready to check out any new idol groups, and Mi-Ke was a group I’d always wanted to hear!

One of the first things that caught my eye ( besides Haruka and Mami’s wacky dancing) was the extemely pretty Keiko Utoku, functioning as more or less the “main” singer (at least for THIS song), and it was her terrific voice that overrode any qualms I had about enjoying this catchy 50’s style rock ‘n’ Roll number! I had to have this single!


Once Again, I had fallen in love with a single that was out of print! You have to understand that back in the days before the internet, If a single was unavailable for ordering, you were pretty much out of luck! Fortunately, there were several used j-pop CD stores I could visit, and it was at one of them that I found my beloved copy of Mi-Ke’s KANASHIKI TEDDY BOY!


After Mi-Ke, Keiko Utoku would go on to enjoy a successful solo career as well, and as you can see by this performance of “Good-By Morning”  below, she still has that great voice, and has managed to become even prettier!!

More Miyazaki: Tada, Kimi Wo Aishiteru

So I finally got around to watching the Aoi Miyazaki / Tamaki Hiroshi movie “Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru” (Heavenly Forest)”, and overall, I have to say that the movie was pretty darn great!

 The movie showcases Aoi Miyazaki portraying probably her dorkiest character to date in Shizuru, the runny-nosey nerd who follows Tamaki Hiroshi’s character Makoto around first as a curiosity, then gradually as an enduring friendship. The charisma between the two actors is terrific, and at once you know the two misfits are made for each other, and find yourself hoping they will realize it themselves!

  Despite having the perfect (albeit flawed) girl right in front of him, Makoto only has eyes for classmate Miyuki, and really, who can blame him? As played by gorgeous actress Kuroki Meisa, Miyuki is the total embodiment of unattainable pretty, that holy-grail-ish purity a la John Hughes movies, and when she actually gives Makoto the time of day, no one can fault him for developing tunnel vision for her!

  Of course, anyone with a heart knows that Makoto will only find true happiness with nerdy Shizuru, and I think that’s saying something for how lovable Miyazaki’s character is that I found myself yearning for her, and getting irritated whenever Miyuki entered the picture!

Only in a situation like this would I be more attracted to a gal like Shizuru:

over a delicious babe like Miyuki:

but that’s just how it happened! The movie is just crammed full of great characters, and the forest backdrops where Shizuru and Makoto go to take photographs and forget their troubles are almost surreal, like they’ve wandered into painted pictures! All these elements made for a very solid story, and I found that even weeks after I’d watched it, I just couldn’t get it out of my mind. I’d be walking about, right as rain, when I’d suddenly think about the show and become melancholy!

The story of the two nerdy students, the romantic triangle with the “pretty” student, and the “heavenly forest” they escape to, will leave a mark on you, no question about it! Like dramas like Summer Snow, you’ll find yourself thinking about it for years to come!

A story about friendship, love, and the impact we have on each others lives.

The Circle is Now Complete: Atsuhime Book I

After getting over the initial excitement of getting my ATSUHIME Official Drama album book, It was my friend Car who first pointed out that there were quite a few important characters that seemed to be missing from the book! Her first concern was that actor Ikki Sawamura wasn’t covered, and then it crossed my mind that they’d forgotten to put Kyozo Nagatsuka in it as well, and that was just mystifying, because he was such an important character in the Taiga Drama!

I was to later find out that the book I had purchased was in fact, the SECOND book, released to coincide with the show’s second half, and all the characters and incidents we’d wondered about had been covered in the FIRST release! KUYASHII!

  I went back to Hakubundo, where I’d bought the second book, hoping wishfully that they’d still have some of the first book in stock, but not only did they not have that first book, I was to find that the second book that I’d just bought had ALSO sold out by then! Thank God I picked up those copies when I saw it that first time!

  I figured I had to get used to the idea of not owning the first book, but was suggested I try Amazon Japan, and I was happy to discover that they still had lots of copies of the book in stock, and for only around $10.00! I quickly ordered the book, and was shocked to find the postage was $30.00! Yikes! But I would have paid a lot more for the book on ebay anyway, so I gladly purchased it.

 And guess what? That postage was well worth the price, because my book came in THREE DAYS! Yep, I ordered the book Saturday Night, and the package arrived Tuesday afternoon! I thought I’d scan a few pics to celebrate my completion of my Atsuhime Books at last (unless NHK decides to release one more book, which is pretty unlikely!)

One thing I wanted to mention that I didn’t touch on before is that Atsuhime’s mother Oyuki is played by veteran actress Kanako Higuchi, whom I’d fallen in love with years ago when she played the mother (again) of  the show’s heroine in the NHK Morning Drama Amakarashan, (a show that had me running out to try and find her Water-Fruit Shashinshuu!) and it was really sweet to see her in a drama again-She still looks just as beautiful as ever!

When I have the time, I'll have to scan more of the lovely ladies from this excellent Taiga Drama!

A Tale Of Two Aois

So this afternoon I moseyed on down to Shirokiya, that local store that carries japanese stuff  (CDs, Magazines, Food, Electronics, Furniture, etc), to pick up a package of Mikawaya mochi and see what new magazines and CDs they’d gotten in.

Perusing the magazine rack, I thought I spotted Miyazaki Aoi’s eyes peeking out at me from behind the rows of fashion magazines. I pulled the mag out, and, yep! I was right! My lovely Atsuhime/Nana-chan was smiling on the cover of a publication called “Mini”, and I quickly flipped through the pages to see if she was featured in any pictorial!

Well, Ms. Miyazaki WAS in an article, and there were two cute pages of her modelling various outfits, showcasing that Nana grin! When you include the cover, that’s three terrific full-page pictures of Aoi Miyazaki, but how much WAS the magazine, anyway? I flipped the mag over and found the sticker on the back said it was only $4.00!! Yes!

I was already thinking this was a awesome find, but then I turned a few pages and found the very next pictorial featured lovely MissYU AOI!!! That’s two-two-two mints in one! Now this magazine was was even MORE of a deal, with over four gorgeous pages of Yu Aoi posing in various designer outfits, looking as desirable as ever!

The above pic looks like she just dropped by to say "Hi!", and the blouse underneath the overalls looks pure Hagu!

The picture below has got to be my favorite shot of Yu…She looks so darn pretty here! "Unsqueaky" is right!

We’d just been joking about the “Battle of the Aoi’s”, and here was a magazine featuring both of them! I think it’s hilarious and quite telling, too, about the apparent dual admiration these two actresses command. As noted in my last two posts, there are camps that lean towards Yu Aoi more, some give Aoi Miyazaki the edge, and some (like me) who can’t get enough of both of them- but whatever the case is, MINI magazine made sure to cover ALL bases and serve up both girls at one time! YATTA!

The MINI magazine also had a nice pictorial of Koizumi Kyoko (which I'm sure Morningberryz would find interesting), as well as an article about j-rock group The Pillows (A favorite group of Dan’s!) What an issue! There's something for everybody!

I forgot to mention that she's also on the cover of a recent issue of "Switch" magazine which usually has a decent amount of article coverage on the cover celebrity...it's been in my Amazon Japan shopping cart since July 7th...just waiting for more things to order so that the outrageous shipping charges don't seem so much. Having a bit of a Inoue Mao infatuation right now too. :P

That's a pretty cool way to design a box set! You were the one who first noticed how the obscured image came to look like her when you stood far away from the set. I just thought it was a freaky funny cover of supposedly her. :P

BTW, that "Switch" magazine...I think I saw a copy of that Mag with Aoi Miyazaki (!) on the cover of it at Hakubundo. I think that was the title... But it looked like a gamer magazine, so I figured she wouldn't be featured inside, so I passed it by.

Mao Inoue! So didjya see that last Hana Yori Dango movie yet?

Ah I'm going to end up spending probably a bit more for it as I just sent in the order yesterday...it might take a little while to arrive though as I don't think they have everything in stock. She's squatting and wearing I think it was a blue dress? Hopefully there's a nice pictorial as Switch customarily does with their cover artist features. I ordered another one with Sakurai Kazutoshi on the cover. :)

I haven't even searched for the movie version yet...what's funny is that my brother can probably find it before I can if I asked him to. He's become amazing at finding things online since his J-Pop/K-Pop/anything cute interest has perked! Ah I was up late too the past two nights and I'm still up now....was having a widget episode just now and for much of the day. :/ Two polls are up...please vote if you get a chance. :) I've had a total of six hours of sleep in the past two days...I don't think I'm going to last much longer....must sleep!
