Spiritual Hijinks in Haken Uranaishi Ataru

An absolutely engaging drama, Haken Uranaishi Ataru tells the story about a former child TV fortune teller psychic sensation who, in her 21 year, enters the real world and begins working as a temp in an advertising agency.
The drama begins with the ethereal medium Kizuna (Mayumi Wakamura) talking to a client about worries, and relates a story about a girl who has a bunch of problems herself….
The girl’s name is Kazumi Kanda, and among other problems like indecision, awkwardness and insecurity, is dealing with having to tell her no-good ronin boyfriend that she is pregnant.
Fretting over the problems on the platform, she almost misses her train, getting stuck in the doors, but is saved when a mysterious girl in dark glasses reaches out and pulls her in. Kazumi is grateful but the girl makes no reaction.
Heading to work, Kazumi is stunned to see the mysterious girl riding up the elevator with her and enter her workplace!
Come to find out this girl is the office’s new temp hired to take care of the work overflow. Birght and cheery, her name is Ataru Matobu (Hana Sugisaki) and though the employees don’t know it, she’s here to shake their formerly mundane and predictable lives up!
Ataru's demeanor is strangely chipper, happy and excitable, considering her dour appearance and attitude outside. But she takes to the job swimmingly and is the one bright and able person working while the others worry and bicker about things.

The office is a whirlwind of problems, and though section chief Yui Osaki (Yuka Itaya) is kind and likable, she is easily pushed around by her blowhard superior, the curry favoring Takumi Yoyogi (Mitsuhiro Oikawa) who is constantly ordering the group to sort out his outrageous ideas in order to get in good with the uppers.
Among the employees are the grouchy and complaining Seiji Ueno (Yukiyoshi Ozawa) who, after getting passed up in promotion, is a bitter man who would rather argue points than actually do things…
Tomoyo Tabata (Maho Nonami), a highly efficient but icy member who works hard until 6 o’clock, in which she promptly clocks out and leaves, much to the others consternation!
Madoka Meguro (Shotaro Mamiya) is an earnest and eager to work lad, but as he is the son of one of the company’s important clients, he is looked down upon by his fellow workers as someone who got where he is thru favor, and avoided.
Kazuma Shinagawa  is a young guy who has the bad luck to be Ueno’s kohai, and he is constantly being ordered around or yelled at by the grumpy Sempai. Already disillusioned at the job (which he admittedly doesn't take seriously), this added baggage makes him want to give up and turn in his resignation!
And then we have Kazumi herself. She’s been with the company for 3 years and has not yet proven herself to the company. though she puts on a fake smile and tries to satisfy everyone’s wishes, she can’t seem to get ahead.  She is put in charge of a huge project for the first time, but though she does her best, a dizzy spell causes her to falter and wreck the event.

With her firing apparent, she goes home and confesses both the imminent firing as well as her pregnancy. Though seemingly understanding, her boyfriend is quick to tell her that if would be better for them is she had a child later in life, hinting that she should get rid of it. Kazumi is crushed.
The next day, Kazumi makes to appointment at the clinic to abort her baby. In her heart, she doesn’t want to, but doesn’t know what else to do. If only she had a friend who she could confide in and get advice from!
In desperation, she logs onto the internet in search of fortune tellers who might give her some clue as what to do…where she discovers an amazing secret: The company’s new office temp is actually former child psychic Ataru!!!
Forgoing the appointment, Kazumi confronts Ataru the next day, not to threaten her but to ask for advice as she has no one in the world she can confide in.
Ataru at first flatly refuses, but when Kazumi pours her heart out to her, she takes pity on her and then, shedding her bright and cheery demeanor, reveals her true, cold self and tells her she can ask three questions.
Kazumi asks why things always go wrong for her, why she doesn’t have friends, and why she doesn't know what to do.

Focusing in on Kazumi with penetrating, haunting eyes, the room goes dark and they are transported on a mind-trip to see Kazumi's past self, Ataru shows her that the problem lies in her own confidence and lack of love for herself.
She tells Kazumi that there is something that only she can do. And ultimately, she assures her that NO ONE truly knows what they are doing- EVERYONE in life is winging it, just like her.

And thus, painfully aware of her shortcomings and what she has to change to become a better person, Kazumi takes her first step to her new self, finding the voice in her to speak up, and finds that her situation and future may be brighter than she thought!
As the show ends, Kazumi rides down the elevator with Ataru after work. With gratitude for her help, Kazumi asks if Ataru would be her friend. Stunned, Ataru asks, “Are you asking me to be your…friend?” When Kazumi nods, Ataru beams a happy smile- “My first friend!!
But then, putting back on her dark glasses, her voice drops to a cold demeanor once more and warns: "But if you tell anyone about my psychic powers….I’LL KILL YOU.”
And with that, she turns and leaves the befuddled Kazumi standing in the lobby!LOLOL!
Man, this drama just GRABBED me from its very first episode with its unusual premise and wonderful, sympathetic and engaging characters and it hasn't let down yet! I haven't had so much psychic fun since Satomi Ishihara's "Reinoryokusha Odagiri Kyoko No Usso"!
