This past week I tried to watch three new dramas without subtitles: The Tsubasa Honda drama CHEAT, the Saki Takaoka thriller RIKA, and the Hiroshi Abe sequel MADA KEKKON DEKINAI OTOKO. I'd been curious about these dramas and just couldn't wait for someone to pick 'em up!
Both the Saki Takaoka Bunny Boiler and the Hiroshi Abe drama were largely easy enough to understand, maddeningly it was CHEAT, the one I wanted to see MOST, that put me through the hoops and left me utterly lost and with a swimming headache!
As a drama reliant on speech and dialog to set up the situations and trick/con people, it made sense that I couldn’t make heads or tails out of most of the scenes, though the Idol parts were funny enough to “get”. Looks like I’ll still have to rely on those good old subtitlers to make my j-drama watching experience doable!
