I love Rie Miyazawa, but her 4-part television show Gu Gu Datte Neko De Aru ~Gu Gu is a Cat, After All (about a lonely woman anime writer/illustrator who adopts a cat after her old one dies, and the ways her life changes afterwards) sure can get WEIRD!
On the surface, it is a tale that follows Asako, a very eccentric and scatterbrained artist who tends to wander away from her desk to get inspiration, and along the way she meets and sees things that affect her profoundly, for better or worse about her job, her manga stories, and, ultimately, her future.
So as each story concludes, you’re thinking what a sweet little episode it was…But, as Billy Mays once said, “WAIT…There’s MORE!” Suddenly all the characters of the episode come out, and, led by Asako, meet up and break into an impromptu dance as folksy music plays…. Very Sweet, but totally what the heck…?!
As you can see, even Gu-Gu is thinking “These People are NUTS!”
Granted, they’re not always DANCING, sometimes the characters are all running about trying to catch kitties out of the air, the one thing that these scenes all have are the entire cast breaking the fourth wall and participating in this strange deviation from a “regular” show!
BTW, though it may be hard to believe, Beautiful Rie Miyazawa does a particularly outstanding job at playing a kooky, frumpy old lady.
